    Maxtrax or DeLorme?

Other than screen size there is no difference. I run Gaia on my iPhone as well for hiking.

    Going nowhere slow

El Camino del Diablo along the AZ/ Mexico border. The desert isn't always dry (or forgiving). The disturbed area ahead was where I extracted myself using the winch and MaxTrax.

    Maxtrax or DeLorme?

If you are running Gaia on a tablet with gps you have navigation covered. Spend some time getting to know the program. I am loving it. So the choice is recovery vs communication via InReach. As said above, going on short trips where you have a pretty good idea where you will be going and...

    Days Planned vs. Supplies Planned

Interesting thread. Coming into overlanding from a bushcraft/survival background, I use the Rule of 3s to guide some of my decisions. And normally I am overlanding in the Southwest. Obviously shelter is pretty well covered on an overland trip. Water becomes a high priority issue quickly, food...

    Rig mishaps

Not my rig!! I was driving some nasty and lonely rough roads to the Verde River Hot Springs a few days ago. At the intersection of FR58 and Dugas Road I came upon this. Having no idea how long it had been there, I quickly checked the interior of the vehicle, shouted a few times and then blew...

    Attention Toyota 4Runner Runners

Never owned anything but a 5th Gen (2016 Trail), so nothing with which to compare it. So far I am very pleased with its capability, reliability, ride, and the availability of aftermarket support. Wish it got better gas mileage.

    Storing eggs

My wife cracks and puts them in repurposed coffee creamer bottles, effectively sealing out the air (oxygen) that would cause them to spoil. We toss them in the cooler. Each bottle is enough for a frittata, scrambled eggs, or an omelet for two. Definitely better than broken eggs making a mess.

Bedding for camping, what do you use?

We also use the Jet Bunker from OZ Tent for all the reasons above. I've never liked sleeping bags unless it is really cold. So we use a good self inflating pad and a sheet, light blanket, heavy blanket combo in the OZ Tent. Recently we found a nice down blanket for a reasonable price on...

    Backpacking and hiking

I agree. Some of my favorite overlanding trips have been built around getting to good hiking trails. Spent two weeks last fall in southeastern UT. Old ruins are a thing for me. Cedar Mesa has some nice ones well off the beaten path.

Redemption on El Camino del Diablo

While we did the ECDD in opposite directions, we did the trail in your avatar in the same direction! Glad you enjoyed.

    Overland Related Recreation

Hiking. Having a good overland rig here in the southwest gets you to some very nice but seldom visited areas with amazing hikes.

What goes on TOP and what goes INSIDE??

For me on extended trips up top are things I don't want in the cabin of the 4Runner. The roof rack has: - 5 pound propane bottle on a universal Front Runner mount - a Plano box with recovery gear (gets muddy and nasty if used and I'd rather keep it out of the cab) - up to 4 jerry cans or...

    White Rim Favorite Campsites

The $30 is for your entire trip (up to 14 days I think). Just put in the notes for each camp that this is for a multiday trip and maybe add your first days's camp selection to the notes on the second day camp, etc. I had the same question and called the backcountry office. They were really...

    White Rim Favorite Campsites

Completed the White Rim back in October for the first time going clockwise. Stayed at White Crack and Hardscrabble B. Used those to split the trip in logical parts. I went fairly slow stopping to take a lot of photos and soak the place in. Can be done in 2-days but I wanted more time...

    Spare Tire Paradox

Had the same issue with my 4Runner. Portions of the KDSS system limited room in the spare compartment. Went with a CBI dual swing arm rear carrier. Been happy with it so far.

Redemption on El Camino del Diablo

All along Steph had been teasing me about seeing the infamous “mudhole” that captured me last time. We pressed into the Pinta Sands. This time there was no mud, just the talcum powder fine sand and clay mix. We stopped at the site of the previous disaster, not as imposing looking this time...

Redemption on El Camino del Diablo

Back in January a buddy and I attempted a traverse of the El Camino del Diablo in less than ideal conditions. In the midst of a wet winter, we knew sections near the Pinacate Lava Flow and San Cristobol Wash would be difficult. We were stuck in mud of the worst sort for an hour east of Pinacate...
