Yes, I baseline my vehicles. I don't like it when something that should not go wrong does go wrong 1,000 miles from home. Plus how else do you get to know your vehicle?
Sell it.
You are not "in love" with the LX470 since you are concerned about making a profit from it. More than likely you wont want to deal with the quirks of owning a 20 year old SUV. Personally, somebody will have to pry my 1999 100 series out of my hands and I couldn't think of a better...
That is one nice YJ! Are the fenders/grill aftermarket? It looks like they are one piece, connected near the headlights but I see bolts under the fender.
I get the "nostalgia and inherent affinity" for the wrangler. My first wrangler was a YJ, but I sold it for a TJ... and I've now owned that...
I removed the OB badge from my vehicle after being approached by an overly friendly individual in a primitive USFS campground. This individual wanted to talk about OB, a lot, and did not get the hint that I just wanted to be left alone.
Back on topic. The worse campground experience I've ever...
Members that do nothing but promote their youtube channels get a quiet "Ignore" on OB from me. Same for folks who do nothing but link their blog or website. If I wanted to find videos, I would start my search on youtube. Since most videos related to overlanding are nothing more than somebody...
I live so far in the sticks I have Starlink for internet at my house....but I digress.
Admittedly, I know close to nothing about IL...other than I saw a police car back in 2003 that had a "NORMAL POLICE" decal on the side of the car on my way to Kalamazoo to pick up a Jeep. I still chuckle...
Explore your backyard.
Seriously. We all love getting away for that multi week/month trip, but start exploring the weird, wacky local things in your area/state.
You will not only perfect your rig and gear, but you might learn something or experience something unexpected. If I can explore...
I would not buy a NEW Rino. You can find gently used Rino's on eBay for a fraction of the price. They are reliable and easy to use. An old Rino works and communicates with a modern Rino no problem and all Rinos will communicate with a standard GMRS radio.
Have you considered an OLD Colman dual burner? One of the things you need to determine is how much room you have for a stove and stove accessories. Some of the really nice units are waaaaaay to big for my need and storage capacity.
I have been using a Colman 425 I was given many, many years ago...
I usually plan 100-150 miles per day on forest service roads that you would typically find in Colorado or along a track like the Continental Divide Trail. This seems to work well for a 9AM departure from camp and a 4-5PM arrival at camp. Sure some days I cover that mileage faster and other days...
I am glad to be a 'crazy' person. Here in the Midwest most people perceive camping as a long weekend (or even weeks) in their big pull behind camper or motorhome at a lake in a well developed campground. When I explain that my goal for camping is to get as far away from people, amenities and...
I stopped using Gaia because I absolutely hated the way tracks and waypoints were (are) managed. Editing tracks in the Gaia web portal was infuriating. Maybe my expectations were too high for Gaia coming from a background in GIS, but I found the whole enchilada terrible. I never could tell if my...
I say, go for it! What do you have to loose? If the components of the power pack that you would use, work; I see no downside. You can easily shove everything you want into a pelican style box.
I recently built my own waterproof powerbox for multi-night kayaking trips. This will help keep my...
Do you want to buy a vehicle for $10k and then baseline maintain it, or is $10k your total vehicle and baseline maintenance price?
I went from a TJ to a 100 Series Land Cruiser (I still have the TJ, but no longer take it on extended trips). 6 years ago, the old Land Cruiser plus the maintenance...
I use the same panel on the roof of my Land Cruiser to keep my house battery topped off.
The Renogy 100w panel with a Voyager charge controller has no problem maintaining a charge with the fridge running. I am pretty sure it could run the fridge indefinitely with good sunlight everyday.
Obstacles will degrade service and I am not sure much more can be done to clean up the service. I can say that in the year I've had my dish, it has tilted from a northern orientation to a more vertical orientation as more satellites have come online.
Luckily the Starlink app will show you what...
I have been a Starlink user from home since March 2021. I initially signed up to be a beta tester in late 2019. Starlink is great and not even in the same league as other Satellite ISP's. I was a HughesNet customer for 7 years prior and hated every minute of it! Every sub 1mbps download with...
I replaced a basic pull out awning (smittybilt brand) with the same OVS Nomadic LT you have. Not only does the OVS awning provide way more coverage, it is also much easier to deploy than the basic awning was. I managed to pick up the OVS from their site for around $600 during a sale. It proved...
