I’m not a fan of the 270 degree type awnings- we have a side awning on the cruiser and another over the rear of the trailer. They work great, they are light and easy to deploy. Most importantly, they keep us dry and shaded for about 1/4th the cost.
Check out the company “four wheel camper” . They are pop ups that are well built and will hold up to rugged off road use. They hold their value and there are always used ones on the market. I wouldn’t bother with an RV dealer, they are snake oil salesmen and specialize in selling over priced...
Agree- a lot of people think they are chefs or grill masters or whatever the current trend might be. Just put that food in a piece of good cast iron, a couple of spices and be done with it. Years ago we had some friends that would go on and on about food prep, recipes, etc etc, so we invited...
Funny you should mention FWC. Compared to others they are cheap. Well not cheap, they are very well built, but 10s of thousands less than other expedition worthy 4 season truck campers. I’m currently in the process of specing one out. I also briefly looked at the Norweld Flatbed trays. Now...
The Essential Guide to Overland Travel in the US & Canada ; by TeriAnn Wakeman , was recommended by a couple of members. I’m about halfway through, and although dated a bit as far as communications, ( Star Link & Apple have changed all that) this book is a bounty of information, for short...
We use the viair 300, it gets warm after airing up all four tires, but it cools off in a few minutes and I put it back in the bag it came in. While waiting on it to cool down is a good time to give your vehicle and trailer the once over by inspecting your undercarriage, checking your fluids...
Two years ago I had a LRA 25 gallon auxiliary tank installed in my 80. I usually do most of my own work, but at the time I needed it done last month. That, and the fact that a specialty shop would get it right, as in no drips, no runs, no errors. So, I bit the proverbial bullet, and paid 150 an...
I’ve had one puncture in over,( honestly I can’t remember when,) but odds are it did happen before, 40 or more years. My father-in-law uses my barn and driveway to the barn to work on his camper and his VWs. Never cleans up after himself, a 1/4” bolt made its way through a BFG AT E. Since...
Ah, nailed it. Years ago I put out an invite for anyone interested to stop by and say hi and maybe set up camp with us along a track in the San Rafael Swell. It was suggested I set up a “ rally point “. So, I went to the rally point threads to have a look. Needless to say I did not set up a...
Tribal, you mean like if you go on IH8Mud and you own a Jeep that Mud is being tribal? Or, by being tribal, you mean no space/content is given to the RV, car camping or weekend warrior crowd, and lots of space/content given to the self reliant, long distance vehicle supported journey...
Just think, when the kids are all grown and out and about, you’ll be able to afford new underwear when you need it. I had a few pair that lasted nearly 20 years!
So, my building of a poor man's expedtion truck will pass? Oh thank goodness ! I was so concerned about how all my friends would react! Is there a humor emogee? Seriously, I agree with you, all things being relative in life, as in recreation. You and I may dream of spending a year...
Truth- I’ve noticed over the decades that once you get out, truly remote and away, no one really cares about your gear. Folks we have encountered are much more interested in our minds and how we think. Why are we there alone? Where do you come from? In my mind ( and my wife’s ) it’s not about...
This thread keeps going and going and going. I wasted 15 minutes of my life yesterday watching a vid telling me to spend 3 grand on a brake upgrade, in order to save my life. Ya rite! It’s a whole lot easier to just keep the GVWR in mind and don’t drive stupid. Hey, our hobby is expensive...
KYB, now there’s a blast from the past. Agree about the 360 degree hitches. I ran with a spinning Lunette ring for one trip. Came home and welded it fast. If the fifteen hundred lb trailer drags my 6,000 lb truck over, I’m in deep doo doo and where I shouldn’t be.
