Looking for recommendations for new tires.

Even with solid front axles? A friend of mine ran a small fleet of 4x4 Ford tow, roll off and extraction trucks 350s on up to 550s and never was a problem, but that was a few years ago.

Looking for recommendations for new tires.

Interesting, GM trucks do have a long reputation of not getting along well with different brands of tires including BFGs and Generals. A friend of mine has a Colorado with Generals on it and after only 25,000 miles they are noisy and cupping. On the other hand, my first set lasted forever, as...

    255/80/17 vs 285/70/17

255/85s are my favorite size, good luck replacing them if needed when far away from the rat races. What’s important is how easy will it be to limp into a tire store in ( name any town or small city in North America large enough to have a tire shop ) our friends case, Healy, and buy a same...

Avoid Rhino Rack...And What to Consider With Alternatives

I'm not surprised by this. Decades ago all that was available were steel racks that would eventually rust out from the inside, even with constant cleaning and re-painting every couple of off seasons. Then Frontrunner introduced an aluminum rack in 2000. In 2008 or so ARB followed suit and...

What features would you most like to see in an overlanding trailer?

I built ours to go anywhere our built 80 series can go. It has , more than enough storage, kitchen in the rear, dust proof, waterproof, an rtt 6’ up, 2x2 frame , with heavy duty leaf springs & shackles, 33” rubber matching the tow vehicle, pintle hook, 36 gallon water capacity with a tap for...

    Use of AI in Overlanding

That’s an hilarious response! I’m sure all the travel aids come in very handy for those with time lines. There’s a famous line from an old science fiction movie, “Time? There is no time in space “ Cmon, passé is a cool word is it not? Then again, I do prefer single malts over straight up...

    Use of AI in Overlanding

For us, that would remove the magic of finding a great place as knowing every little nook and cranny before you got there would ruin the discovery of the unknown. Exploring would become passé.

    Use of AI in Overlanding

My son in law and I played with AI and used it to tell a short story of our trip to Tuk last summer. Blech. It read like something out of a Hallmark Card Movie. Blech- I can’t imagine how AI might slaughter technical data and information.

    Winch battery question

Ya, that, sine wave inverter, 300 watts of solar, dc-dc management, and 3 135ah Dakota lithiums. I about choked on the price, then add starlink, etc etc. gonna be home for about 5 years, more if we stay slim & healthy. and avoiding full hookup sites. I’ve priced all the separate components...

    Winch battery question

My point being, a second battery can and has been used as both an auxillary battery and a house battery. I’ve been doing it that way for 25 plus years. In the beginning old fashioned lead acid, lately AGMs. The OP asked if he should add an auxillary battery. Yes, hook your winch up to that...

    Winch battery question

Then, ( and I'm wide open to learning new things ) what the "experts" are saying is that it is not recommended to have a second battery play both roles, both house and auxiliary? With a very simple switch to connect (auxiliary) and disconnect (house)? Running two high quality AGMs? no need...

US West Hello everyone. My wife and I went to Afton Canyon campground last week and we must say that it sucked! (clickbait)

That’s actually pretty funny. Who would think mosquitos in the desert? We have had great success using permethrin10, deet and the thermacells. They will attack your private parts quickly, so carry the thermacel , let it warm up a bit, then go.

    Into the desert, overland camping.

I'll play as we have seen a lot of interesting things and are always looking forward to many more. First photo is of the remains of the Keys Ranch in Joshua Tree NP. this is the Mariscal Mine in Big Bend NP. last but not least, the 13 faces along the Salt Creek in Southern Utah

    Desert camping is ok?

The high deserts and the tundra are our preferred areas where we feel most at home. No people, no light pollution, no noise. No artificial barriers or distractions between yourself, if alone, or your loved and nature. Solitude is a great way to connect with what’s important in your life...

Real word opinions of 270 degree awnigs

How did that happen? It looks like you will have to completely dismantle the thing and take it to a friend ( if you’re lucky ) or a shop that can weld aluminum.

    Dealing with other people's nasty

Agree 100% - people abusing the privilege of access to our public lands ought to be dealt with in the extreme. We as a community have reached a point that we need to begin offering up viable, long term solutions. We all need to have a drivers license to operate on public highways, and...

Question: what to do if broken down and no cell service?

All the above is true. I’ll add that anally retentative preventive maintenance is the key to not breaking down. Alternator has 150,000 miles on it? Time for a new one. Same for starters, bushings, birfs, ujoints, spark plugs, etc etc etc. I say 150,000 miles because that’s about the average...

    Winch battery question

Oddly enough, I've ever only had to winch myself once in all our travels. Gooey mud, uphill narrow track, lots of trees. Wasn't stuck, we could have waited it out for the sun to dry it up, but instead, I hooked up and made it up without spinning a tire.
