    Refurbishing a cheap Disco 1

So I’ve been resting up from the trip and letting my thumb finish healing up while I get ready to start a new job tomorrow. On the trip I was disappointed in the interior lighting. It’s not great in vintage disco’s to begin with, compounded by the fact my PO apparently threw out the rear...

    15k overland first rig

I got out of Toyotas this year. I loved my FJ, but it didn’t work well with my child seats on long trips, and those trips are a requirement to spend holidays with the Grandparents. I looked hard at the 4runners, driving and working the numbers on several with two different dealerships. I asked...

Your thoughts on this hood rack?

Seems pricy for what is essentially a piece of 1/8” steel with a half dozen holes drilled in it and powder coat/paint applied, but I understand many don’t have the mechanical skills to build such things.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

I lost between 6-8lbs over a 75f-34f drop with 1200 miles between the checks.

    Refurbishing a cheap Disco 1

Back home, had an exhaust leak appear after several hours of Michigan roads this morning. Ryan Muffler Center, in Florence KY are awesome. They had it patched up and back on the road in a jiffy for less than $50. 1600 miles logged, the Rover did really well for its first big excursion. Logged...

What do you think are really good tires for most off road ventures

Discount will also price match if you find the same tire cheaper listed elsewhere which can be quite handy.(ie-amazon)

    Earth roamer?

2003 Land Rover Discovery 2 Build

A very conservative lift on the disco’s can get them a lot further than many will EVER go. Just look at the specs of the varying years of the camel trophy discos. None required massive lifts.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

Aired up the tires after the break in the weather since driving up. Amazing how a 30 degree temp drop effects tire pressures each fall. All set for the drive home this week.

2020 Trip Planning - Texas to Tuktoyaktuk

Well backcountry is always different than pull in campgrounds. For the pull-ins they sub lockers for wires, and generally deal with more lazy campers. The bears will be in camp, you just want them to follow a predetermined path and not get a reward for their trouble. They do that enough and they...

    Looking for rig suggestions

I’m weird, TN doesn’t get enough snow so I plan long road trips up into Ontario mid winter to visit family. The drifting snow occasionally requires some extra clearance and the trip certainly requires 4wd for the trek through the transition zone. The Disco 1 is stupid simple mechanically...

2020 Trip Planning - Texas to Tuktoyaktuk

I’ve seen camps with designated rings to pour off discarded cooking grease/dishwater and other unavoidable smellables in bear country. Always well away from the actual sites, typically caddy corner to bear wire in backcountry sites so when a bear does visit the line between your planned...

    Looking for rig suggestions

If you got a Discovery 1 you could share spares and several special tools with the future vintage Defender. The disco has a more comfortable interior for longer trips where you still want better clearance than the Impreza but don’t want to pile miles on your Defender. At 8k you could budget 2k...

    Mountain House Meals

Last weekend I hade a few mountain house meals that were stored away in a disaster kit I had misplaced a while back. I think we figured out the best by dates were late 2007(purchased pre Y2K). All were fine after decades in and out of storage. Nice to be able to test their longevity claims and...

    Refurbishing a cheap Disco 1

Well, here I was sitting around in Lion’s Head, ON helping a family member prepare the tractor and snow blower for the coming winter. I noticed a failing u joint on the PTO drive and recommend replacement to my FIL now vs waiting until the middle of winter up here. We popped into town and...

    Overlanding with "stock" 4X4

I’ve found the closer I keep most of my 4x4 vehicles to stock the better they do on road, en route to the “off road”. Sure I’ll modify the electrics to suit and cargo storage areas, but I try to leave drivelines and suspensions stock with quality all terrain tires.

Enjoy it, they are great trucks, quirky but great in their environment.

Frame rotted out in several places

^this Drove my ‘99 Land Rover up into Ontario last week. Some of the looks it’s gotten at gas stations and parking lots while shopping have been interesting. Mostly locals amazed it doesn’t have rust holes like the local discos from the time period apparently did. Definitely worth shopping...

    T/a K02 road and off-road tire pressure

And keep in mind that appropriate pressure is dependent on vehicle weight including load. Front tire pressures might need to change if you add a heavy winch and bumper for example.
