Good info right here now.First off I am very sorry that I missed this question, normally I check this page every day.
Overland Bound is a web based program just like all the other navigation and community programs out there. In order to use any part of the app when off grid you will need a ground cell signal or internet satellite connectivity such as Star Link.
Communications when off grid are changing fast, here are a couple of bullet points that may help or confuse the issue;
- If you have a cell signal that is good enough for data then you can get on the app and send an OB-SOS, you can use a cell booster to help get a signal like WeBoost. (As long as you have one bar it will usually boost that to three bars.) The Overland Bound SOS works really well notifying members in a geographic area around your request as long as it is not an emergency. The key point here is that the message is sent to members near you and hopefully they can get to you and help out in a timely manner.
- Garmin InReach is satellite based through the interactive Garmin Response Center (formerly the GEOS IERCC and then the Garmin IERCC). These comms are from the user to Garmin, and if using the general messaging side of the InReach you are connected by text through the satellites. This system is absolutely necessary because of their ability to coordinate any type of official response. InReach coordinates with the user and the provider of the service. (This could be air med, law enforcement, needing gas and so on.) Depending on your insurance coverage this could cost you some big bucks.
- Some iPhone's have the ability to use satellite comms for texting and now T Mobil is working with Star Link to set up a texting network, this is all great but it is still texting. This system has worked for our Forum Manage @Jim SoG.
- Star Link is probably the best method for comms off grid, you can get on the web, send OB-SOS, text, download maps and so on. All this is absolutely awesome BUT it really cant take the place of the InReach-Garmin Responce Center.
- Ham radios are a good option but still not 100% reliable due to coverage.
