Overlanding is: "Vehicle Dependent Travel". Nothing else. We will not further define "overlanding".

No its called knowing where you belong, know your roll, stay in your lane, etc.

By your logic everything I have to talk about will apply to a Subaru outback which is wrong the only thing my truck has in common with a subie is we would both have a turbocharger and a 12v battery everything else is different.

Never said that soft roaders have no place here but I do believe we need segregation from each other. And I think that ob thinks the same since they had to add full sized truck section and 2wd section.
LOL, you can't call for "segregation" and deny elitism in the same post.

It doesn't matter if you're the smartest guy on the entire planet, if you do a poor job presenting it, nobody is going to listen to you.

A while back a guy and his wife camped up the trail from my wife and I. He came in in a fully built new Taco. This thing was really nice, ARB, Warn, really high end stuff to me, nothing was low end. Hell, the sound and lighting system was the best I've ever seen. I drive a 2002 Jeep TJ. It's nice, I love her, and she gets me anywhere I want to go. I'm a Rough Country/Smittybilt/Dick Cepec/Amazon special guy. So Mr. Taco and his wife wander over and we start talking. After a little bit he launches into a speech about how much he loves my Jeep build, he was very kind and very sincere. Obviously, I sincerely returned the favor, this Taco belonged in a magazine, it was beautiful. This went on for a good while, we each gave the tour, and went our separate ways. I think there's a moral to this story.

Maybe I'm not so smart but I am smart enough to realize that this is a business first and foremost and the all inclusive stuff is so they can get money from every type person to join.
They got smart over the last year and went from lifetime membership to year long so yeah the whole idea of we all belong is a business decision not a creed to live by.
Sooner yall realize this the sooner you can get all the communistic californian ideals out of your heads.

You're not wrong here. I appreciate the platform but let's not pretend like this is some pro bono site out to improve the world.

Didn't know they went to an annual sub though... feels kinda shitty with the user growth they've experienced.

For the annual sub that's a chunk of change that is if every member is charged or is the fee only for new members?

No kidding!

Good question.

Who knows the answer?
The original agreement serves as a contract and a lifetime membership was purchased in full so unless there was a clause saying they can do so, there really isn't any avenue to get more from those members unless they create a new tier.

New members after a certain date have to pay annually but others before that date were grandfathered in with the subscription they purchased. That was how it began when they changed it anyway. Not sure if it will stay that way or if it has changed since.

Honestly it sounds like you need to go start your own hardcore offroad forum only for real men. Www.nowinchnoservice.com?

Where do you see people pretending that OB is not a business?

I'm pretty sure that the "founding principles" have existed since "founding" occurred. Do you see something in them that doesn't suggest that inclusiveness is part of the hobby?

I seriously don't understand what you are so worked up over. I started this thread sso wwe ccould hopefully sort out helping people articulate their actual needs, aand you have for whatever reason decided it is your own personal bully pulpit that you can use to tell everyone how much OB sucks, including your drama filled de-badging post like anybody gives a single drop of piss if you have badges on your vehicle.

You clearly don't recognize it,bbut yyou aare iillustrating exactly why people don't follow your advice, rright hhere , right now.

While this site can be used free of charge, charging membership often makes people feel like outsiders and is actually a roadblock to inclusiveness. Notice that nearly every single person on this thread has a membership number boldly displayed under their name... that can intimidate some people into thinking they have to join to be part of the club.

I mean the membership number is literally the largest text in the user block which feels wholly unnecessary. They're really not shy about pushing it in general here or on the YouTube channel.

Holy shit, if someone is so insecure that they are uncomfortable anonymously posting on the internet, then they absolutely do not possess the personal fortitude to put down the Nintendo and get out of the house, even for the tamest version of "overlanding".

None the less, I fail to see where any of that is applicable in this thread.

Wait! Weren't the founders of OB originally BMW-driving Californians before getting into this hobby / lifestyle???? This story is getting better and better.

I think the vagueness in questions comes literally from a lack of understanding, the what tires should I use is a perfect example. Guys who have been around vehicles, and working on them for years know you need to provide what vehicle, how will it be used, is it dry or wet, sand or rock etc. But you have to learn before you know to ask the right questions, I tend to be patient until the person turns out to be a dolt, I assume they do not know and answer as best I can.

@Correus I get the
@Correus I get the whole you own a Land Rover you must have money thing, people look at my D2 and assume it is worth a ton.

Yup. And then they start in with "man, the parts must be hard to find and really expensive". In my case, so far the parts have been relatively easy to get and no more expensive than a basic vehicle. My dad and brother both have domestic trucks and they pay a lot more for parts than I do.

But - as you know there are those handful of parts that can be hard to get and are pricey.

Get this... about 2 or 3 years ago a question was asked on this forum - something like "what's your favorite overland vehicle and why". It was a really interesting thread with all kinds of replies.

I stated I had a '63 SIIa 88 and gave my reasons as to why I liked it and such. Some guy popped up and said "that's my dream rig, I'm not rich so I settled for an LR2". Talk about a kick in the nads!! Thing is, the LR2 he bought cost more than I paid for it and was about the same you'd pay for a decent, drivable Series Rover at that time.

I agree, doesn't mean it doesn't happen though. People are becoming more and more passive and introverted because of technology and it's just the unfortunate side effects.

Either way this thread is off the rails just like every other one.

Honestly... I think it's just for new members. If you look I have a low number and paid membership dues once, haven't been asked to again. If I am asked to... well, there are other groups out there.

What is this, "Real Housewives of Overland Bound?" Never ceases to amaze me that what I imagine are grown men acting like teenage girls. Quit your bitching, like this site or not, people don't really give a shit ton.
