Once again it has happened. At an OB event a member was showing bad gun ownership. Long time followers of this thread can see what happened at another event I attended a few years back with poor firearms ownership. I don't really care if you carry a gun or not. That's your own business and I'm not going to butt in on it. When you pull it out and start pointing it around without regard to the others around you then it does become my business. But for a second time at a OB event I was witness to firearms being handled in a manor that would get you kicked out of a firing range. I was sitting in a chair enjoying the view and a few members had been talking guns. On of the people disappeared for a bit and showed back up with his pistol in hand and was showing off it's features to another member when in his eagerness to please I had the weapon inadvertently pointed at me. I exploded into a loud protest to have him point the weapon away from me. He told me it was unloaded. (this is never a proper response to pointing a gun at someone) I told him I didn't care and to put the gun way if he couldn't handle it properly. As a gun owner myself I NEVER pull it out to show it off. I was taught from a very early age that you don't show your hole card. What is even more disturbing is that he was ex military. Of all the people who should know how to handle a weapon it should be him. He did come up and apologize to me in person for the incident but that was little comfort. I believe he should have been asked by the Rally Point organizer leave the event. I did not organize the event but If I had I would have asked him to leave. What are your thoughts on this type of negligence? Am I overreacting? @Kent R @Michael

You are not over reacting. It's idiots like that which get people killed (he says it's not loaded), and give gun ownership a bad name. There are too many places now that ban firearms altogether , and the list keeps growing. A few years ago I could carry my firearm concealed in any casino/hotel in Las Vegas. Then the October 1st shooting happened. All casinos/hotels have banned guns (conceal carry permit or not). I'd speak with the event organizer and have him banned from all future events. I carry my pistol concealed. It will come out of its holster when I intend to defend myself and pull the trigger, no other time! In my State my first duty is to retreat (diffuse the situation). If the threat continues then I am authorized to defend myself.

Also, in the situation you described an aggressive law enforcement officer could view the idiot's actions as brandishing a firearm. Out come the handcuffs!
there have been many people shot with "unloaded" guns, so yeah...i would be pretty pissed having any gun pointed toward me. i used to gunsmith and i had an FFL
years back and even with that level of comfort, i certainly would not be pulling out any guns in public right now, especially considering how volatile that subject is. i figure a carried weapon is like a wallet full of cash...good to have, but not something that anyone needs to know about.
unfortunately, people like the guy you mentioned is the very reason there are so many laws in place...to protect people from themselves and other's carelessness

Great question. I carry concealed or open depending on the situation. I also frequently have a gun for plinking. When hunting I carry the appropriate firearm for that endeavor.
I believe people should be WELL trained and should maintain a high level of proficiency if they are going to have a gun in there possession. Just like having a good understanding of how our vehicles and other equipment works and performs.
I have been issued an Idaho Enhanced Concealed Carry Permit, I’m an NRA Certified Handgun Instructor and Range Safety Officer.
I have attended Frontsites four day defensive handgun course and several other defensive handgun courses offered here in Idaho.
I also compete in various pistol or steel challenge leagues to maintain a good level of profiency.
I am also a Wilderness First Responder and I believe in being very self sufficient for my family and friends when out and about.
I also like to know who else in my group is armed for safety and security.
I typically will avoid sharing and discussions about firearms in a group settings. However I am always available to discuss firearms and firearms safety one on one. Actually just today I provided introductory pistol and semi-automatic rifle use and safety training to two women. Did I already mention the importance of training. ;)

I do believe in our right to have Firearms but there is a significant responsibility that comes along with ownership and use of any weapon.

That is extremely negligent and dangerous behavior. Very challenging situation as well.
I had a beginner at a shooting range point a gun at my daughter inadvertently . I removed my daughter and myself from the range and told the range master about the issue (which they addressed)...but very frustrating none the less. No range time is worth my daughter’s life!

As retired military, I have no patience for anyone who fails to practice basic common sense firearms safety. Stay vigilant and be aware of your surroundings, Don't be afraid to speak up and hurt some feelings, it could save someone's life.
Welllllll, on another note. I carry where legal and avoid the places I can’t carry.
On Los Ranchito I am armed 100% of the time, 4 legged and slithering critters n all.
Camping and such, side arm and if its legal to shoot then a 22long rifle for plinking.
