*had a police officer in Orange County, CA tell me that it was illegal to carry a bat in your car unless you could prove you were playing baseball or batting. Had to do with gang activity and giving police probable cause. Never carried one, so not exactly sure if that was letter of the law. But I trust and know him pretty well.
 
The officer is correct because of gang activity but if the officer did a little thinking he should tell what your intentions are. Protection or gang. I heard of truck drivers getting into trouble because they had a steak knife with them in the truck. He had to go to court and prove that knife fork and bbq where for eating purpose only. That's how bad officers can get. CA doesn't want you to protect yourself that's why if you have a ccw and carrying you can't have a loaded firearm on you. Chamber empty. CA moto is criminal rights before citizens rights. I Know a military men that just went thur that.
 
My whole family tends to enjoy some range time. My kids even help me with the reloading. And I always have a way to protect myself and my family. But what, where, and why are my business not the group I am with. I don't advertise the fact that I carry. If you ask I'll answer but I won't bring it up first. There is usually a small caliber rifle in the truck for some impromptu target practice if the opportunity is there. We have had many fun afternoons just sitting on the tailgate putting holes in pop cans and papers.

EDC pistol for sure, depending on the crowd or area= home milled SBR ,but you didn’t hear that from me..just easier to pack,you know self defense is not a govt. granted right.. better to have and not need than need.... it’s not show & tell, just a little insurance. I’ll cover your back if I know you’ll have mine. Just sayin

SAID THE OFFICER Yes officer The dog got the other one. :wink:

WTF ..... glad to be an American! Every time I travel to the UK and the customs officer ask if I have anything to declare, I always want to state INDEPENDENCE! Lol

Would love to. But UK gun rules are tight as anything. I have a shotgun certificate which means I am allowed to use it on private land I have permission to be on. Pistols are basically banned unless you have a pretty good reason. Rifles for hunting only but same rules apply (private land use etc with a reason for use i.e hunting).
Jealous of you guys state side. Knives it is.

While I don't doubt your story, I think there has to be more to it. I've driven a truck for 18 yrs. and have never had any form of LE. There are NO federal laws against carrying knives, guns etc. In a commercial vehicle. As a matter of fact the federal dot rule book says they won't get involved in the decision of wether or not firearms may be carried in commercial vehicles. They leave it to each state and most just leave it alone! I honestly don't know or travel in any states that have rules against it.

Big Sky country your right there is more. what made this go to court is that the driver had it between the seats which is a work place. If he had it behind the curtain then that would be fine. Heck one guy got a ticket for smoking in the front seat of his rig even when he was the only one in the truck. The front is considered a work place. This happened to this driver when the smoking laws were changing, but now LE just let it go. Behind the curtain is considered an place of resident because you can lock yourself in. You are right there is no law that says you can't carry a knife. Pocket knife is cool but a big steak knife or something other than a pocket knife will bring questions if out in the open like this guy did. Remember anything that an officer can see from the window he can ask to see it that why I tell driver keep it clean and your curtain closed.
If your an Owner Operator and depending on the rig (Rooster Cruiser) that you drive and the company you work for, they will try to look in. I trained on all the tactics, false tickets that they write and what officers will say and do and what you could say to them years ago. Now every one is on electronic logs. the days of East bound and down are now slow and poor. I remember the speed changes companies did years ago and no bump in pay for their drivers. I got tired of the of new regs, and taxes and all my accountants that got rid of my trucking company. I ran my trucks 48 states and now I sit in my office running my other companies. A little less crap. I hope that you still enjoy the road because it was fun. I miss the casinos.

Well I guess up north here is different, I carry on myway hip (holster) have no problems. Just don't carry in the weigh station. I only run about 3 or 4 states and all don't worry about knives, guns etc. I see drivers all the time wearing sheath knives. I guess its all about the area your in... I know this won't be popular but my truck is eld exempt, the eld has caused such a disaster in the ag world that rates are through the roof and that's fine by me. I make more hauling grain now then I did hauling cows!

Always carry, here. Always. One of the few perks of being retired LEO is ability to carry, concealed in all 50 states. While camping, I usually bring a Benelli 12 ga or a Ruger 10/22. Shotgun for random campsite encroaching animals, and 10/22 for plinking. Sometimes I'll bring the AR if I know I'm camping near a range.

2A Shall not be infringed.

I carry when legal, and do my best to always be prepared for whatever I may come across. I normally don't brings guns out for pleasure, as I can just go shooting at the local range. It is usually self defense, as I find there are many other things I love to do outdoors that I cannot do at home. Recently, in my travels and future plans to be traveling and hiking in bear country, the idea has been reinforced. close to home (Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico) I usually just carry a 9mm or if expecting snakes, my 357 with a few rounds of snake shot in the cylinder. With being in bear country, I've been having to consider larger predators than snakes and stray dogs. So a Redhawk Alaskan in 454 Casual and a 45/70 marlin are in the works. I like traveling with revolvers and lever actions so that I don't have to worry as much about magazine restrictions and the like.

I firmly believe that we must use the rights we have, as much as we can. If we become de-sensitized to the removal of our rights, they will disappear at an expedited rate. I am guilty of leaving my CCW at home most of the time. I have had my permit most of my adult life. With my job, I leave it at home in the morning and don't touch my pistol the rest of the day. I do my best on weekends. There is no one that can protect you 24/7 like you can. So if you are afforded the right, and the laws in your area permit it (which should be all, but I digress), it is on you if you don't carry. I understand the argument of "being afraid of guns" or "not having any experience or training", ok, so we've identified that, change it, that's an excuse not a reason. Your ancestors didn't question their right to bear arms, it was almost certain death of you didn't. I will always carry on trips, it is easy to carry in the car and makes no sense not to. Get your weapon, train with your weapon, and carry your weapon. Your life may depend on it.

I have lived in a few states with the policy that if you are partaking in hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, you may carry without a permit. I don't know exact details, because I have a permit, but might be of interest for someone else.

Amen to that. There are very good reasons that wording is what it is in our Constitution and it’s placement in the list of ten. SELF EVIDENT
 
@NorthStar96 Depends on where you are going firstly, since there are gun regulations wherever you go that don't allow firearms. For the most part most places do, so yes I will carry for several reasons. First off I take our Benelli SuperNova Tactical (this is a 12gauge) shotgun for those of you who don't know, I carry with us wherever we camp that firearms are allowed. Mainly because we camp in some pretty primitive spots, and wild animals can be a problem, crazy people are everywhere, and I have a family with little ones to look after so you bet I will carry to keep them safe, my main reason for the shotgun is because of bears (I understand there are certain laws protecting them, but in a last ditch effort to keep my children from being mauled, I will resort to deadly force as a last resort. My children's lives are way more important to me than a bears) but that also goes hand in hand with being smart and not making yourself a victim to a bear attack. There are plenty of options to consider, and do before escalating to using a firearm to protect your family. I have lived in several different states varying from open carry to concealed carry being illegal. So ensure you know the laws before heading out on adventures, some of you may ask well if your only worried about personal protection from people and not animals just carry a handgun. I suggest a shotgun that can shoot 3inch or 3 1/2 inch shells because of being able to use triple 000 buck shot which is mainly meant for bears. This will give you the most bang for your buck and just the presence of a shotgun will deter most people. I say the shotgun because if you only had a handgun and you were put in a position that involved you having to shoot a bear as a last resort because you feared for your life a handgun is going to do nothing. Also to add if this very unfortunate situation happens to anyone do not just leave the carcass of the bear/cougar/wolf what have you that you killed in self defense. Call/Notify the local authorities i.e. park ranger, it is better for you to admit what you did in self defense and the right process is taken to justify that instead of you leaving the dead carcass and leaving a surprise for the park rangers. Worst come to worst someone witnessed you doing so and you leave without informing someone depending on the laws in that state and who governed that land you could end up in some serious trouble.

According to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from the research that I have seen states that the only time it is legal to kill a grizzly is if you feel threatened and have actual proof. Then you are required to report the incident within 48 hours.

It's always good to be prepared I say! Knowledge is half the battle!

The confusion regarding laws and states being different has a purpose. As we all know, laws are made by people that, for the most part, don't know their constituents. The convoluted laws we have are meant to keep you from carrying. You are not supposed to have the intellect, nor the want, to sit there and learn the gun laws of 50 states. Unfortunately for the law makers, you are and you do. Now, I have my problems with the government telling states what they can and cannot do. But at this point it may be a necessary intervention. I think it may be a positive for people like us, but I'm in no way a lawyer, and there's always a catch.
