Six years ago after a very busy start to our new business, my wife and I spent Christmas on the Metolius River in Central Oregon. I took along a camera and my laptop, creating this video of our holiday. Every year since we have shared it in our weekly newsletter as our Christmas card. I thought I'd share it here with you fly fishing fans on Overland Bound. It was my first attempt at video production, so be kind.

May you all receive a River for Christmas. Cheers!

Hi, my name is Scott and I'm addicted to fly fishing.

But really, I fly fish a lot. I stopped using conventional gear many years ago. I prefer fishing out of my float tube.

I do a lot of back country fishing, which is why on here I go by flyjeep.

I've been a director of my local fly club for 5 years. I enjoy teaching others how to fly fish. I specialize in Stillwater. I also fish the ocean from a kayak and the surf.

On average I get out over 60 to 80 times a year.

Here's some video from Lake Davis in Plumas County. We got some nice fat trout here. The seagulls go nuts when they hit the shore. Main food on the lake.

Hey! My name is Scott, I was born and raised in Reno, Nevada. Fly fishing is my mistress, I fish as much as my wife allows. If anyone is planning on heading to the Reno area or more specifically, Pyramid Lake, hit me up and we can fish! My overlanding is almost always built around at least one good fishing spot.

Hello my new best friend! Pyramid Lake is on my list of places I NEED to fish. I had a guy come into the shop over Christmas with some great photos of beautiful Lahontans. I've been researching and there are a few "wild" fish in small streams in SE Oregon, but most are closed due to a fire that burn much of the riparian years ago. I'll be poking around down there this year looking for the odd creek that is open and still holds fish.

Lately I've focused on locating the very small population of West Slope Cuts still in OR. I have a watershed in mind and an expedition planed for spring, which can't come fast enough.

We have a deal we've started called Oregon Trout Trail, getting anglers to learn more about the native Trout species in our state. Kind of a fun thing, but very low key. It keeps me busy between Steelhead and Salmon trips...

Welcome to Overland Bound!

Hi Scott, I am a Scott as well. I've fished Pyramid a good number of times. You now the lake is closed right now and will stay closed for about a month.

I know the guys at the Reno fly shop, which I assume you know as well. Rob has taught me well on that lake.

A group of us from Overland were out at Moon Rocks playing on the 1st right before the storms started.

Hey! Pyramid is such an amazing place, let me know when you head down this way. Also, if you have any questions about fishing in Nevada, I have a few spots, some even pretty close to Oregon. That's cool, I'll have to check out your Oregon Trout Trail. I plan on making my way up to Oregon sometime this year so I will definitely have to pick your brain.

Hey Scott! Ya the roads got washed out hard, it's pretty wild to see how much damage all that water can do. I do think the lake is only going to be closed a few more days though, I'm hearing next Monday. Yes, I am very familiar with all the guys at the fly shop, good group of guys! Ya I just heard about you guys being out at the Moon Rocks, too bad I missed it. Hopefully I can catch you guys on one of the next trips.

No worries! I have plenty of intel to share. Mostly Steelhead chasers up here, but we do have some good Trouty stuff on the east side and down south. I have connections all over the state for angling intel and have been trying to do more back road Trout trips myself. Southeast Oregon has been outside my normal treks, but a new RTT rolls in here on Tuesday and I plan to make good use of it this year.

We're looking at a pretty good water year with the snow we been getting, so fishing should be fantastic. The next few weeks could be very interesting as this white stuff rinses away in the foothills and lowlands, but most streams could use a good flushing anyway. We'll probably make the evening news next week with flooding, mudslides, Portland protestors and the normal Northwest mayhem. I can hardly wait for spring.

I got to go get ready to play fly shop owner, but wanted to share a few photos of something a friend of mine tyed and brought into the shop last week. I agreed to photograph it for him and it's too cool not to share. The body is made up of 74 doz Flashback PTs, with 4 doz Black PTs for the butt. The wing is Orange Heron Speys, with a Carrie Stevens Streamer tail and a couple Squirrel Streamers for the cheeks. The hackle is moose mane woven in the George Grant style. All told you're looking at around $2300.00 worth of flies. Yes, he tyed them all. Yes, he has too much time on his hands...

Fished the coast yesterday for Steelhead. Rivers are low, cold and clear. That is about to change.... Pineapple Express is bringing warm rain to the NW and we have a bunch of low level snow waiting to melt away... time to build an ark.

We just went through the same thing down here in Reno. Had some pretty good flooding on the Truckee but it wasn't as bad as they predicted.

They're threatening us with an ice storm today. Sent one staff member home as he has to transverse the Columbia Gorge influenced frozen tundra. I'm hanging in till the UPS driver gets here. I've got a rod on there that is heading to Tera del Fuego tomorrow, if it gets here. Kind of looks like I'll have to chain up to get home tonight with ice falling on packed snow. Fun stuff. River forecasts look ugly all across Oregon for the next week.

I'm new to Overlanding but not fly fishing. Half the reason I have developed an interest in overlanding is to get to the water. This summer we are planning a trip from Colorado to California culminating at San Diego.

Last year I started using www.wildtroutstreams.com by Gogal Publishing. There's also an app I purchased which helps locate wild trout. Have not used it a ton but when I have it has proven pretty reliable.

As I begin the trip planning I find myself wishing there were a central program to overlay travel maps as well as fishing data.

As a side note to the folks considering Tenkara, I picked one up a couple of summers ago for my then five year old to use. Having no reel to worry about or line to tangle on his feet he was able to really quickly pick up the casting and caught his first wild trout on the rod. I also fish it occasionally including this past fall on a trip to Japan!

Sounds like a great adventure. Doesn't look like you're heading through Oregon, so I can't help you much there, but when you make it to San Diego you might want to consider chasing Makos for a day or two. It's not the cheap seats, but it is a blast. My friend, Conway Bowman is the guy you want to fish with, but there are a few other captains that guide fly anglers. Leave the Tenkara on the beach for this one, that's my 14 weight bent over on a 7 footer that is at least 9 feet in the air. Amazing creatures. On this trip in 2014 I hooked 11 in two days. Fun stuff.

If plans change and Oregon pops up on the GPS give me a shout... Travel Safe!

Thanks for the recommendation @OregonTrail4runner. I enjoy flats fishing, the sight fishing is challenging and the water is typically really beautiful. If Mako fishing is like the other deep water fly fishing (either using teasers and/or live bait) I end up feeling like it is chumming. Just not my thing.
