I came here to say that I have continued to run my CB and have not heard a thing - and I see that my notifications are broken and I missed a bunch. Great conversation!
Cell/Ham/GMRS/etc. drop off pretty quickly when you get truly remote - as long as you have a view of the sky you can hit a satellite. A lot of the satcom "service plans" have gotten more friendly lately allowing you to deactivate and reactivate without heinous fees (as @RoarinRow points out).

I have HAM, GMRS and CB, it's not bery difficult to find yourself in a area with no reception. The Garmin InReach is best safety device available.
Most my trips are 1-3 days, I leave a itinerary with friends, mostly use GMRS if others are in the group.
APRS offers a lot of the same situational awareness for family back home; but that is limited as well. HF APRS from camp could be interesting...
