Depends, the newer stuff is a bit better but no longer comes in a manual trans. Honestly I think a 3.6R Outback CVT is ideal for overlanding as far as overlanding in a Subaru goes. The high-torque CVT (14-19)seems to hold up better than the 5 speed autos in the older 3.6 cars. Hope this helps.
I work for subaru and I had a 13 Crosstrek, largest tire you can fit with or without a lift is 215/75R15 or any size that measures about 28" The wheel wells go vertical so there's no way around it without cutting. The All-terrains are 215/75R15 in the picture. The Blizzaks are 215/65R17...
