Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
Everyone needs a daily knock-a-round shoe...something that's comfortable to drive in, walk in, and do some lite hiking. Kind of a Swiss Army Knife of outdoor shoes. For about the last 15-20 years that go-to shoe for me was a Merrill Chameleon, just about a perfect outdoor shoe. So of course...
Water...have more than you think you'll need. Tires...LT rated all terrains or mud terrains. Extraction gear...at least some MAxTrax and a shovel. Maps...for when your GPS fail you. And a Spot or some other emergency communication device. Personal protection, meds and first aid kit.
Oh, don't...
It doesn't have to be in a remote location to be taken. Case in point, our winnebago was stolen from a commercial RV Park in Wears Valley, the Smokies. January of this year and it has not been recovered. I had paid it off and received the Title just two weeks earlier.
Low cost Honda Element AWD can be had all day long for 2K to 4K. Had an AWD 1st gen CRV(forerunner to the Element), bought it for 2K. Did the Alpine Skyway one summer along with Yankee Boy Basin. So your premise of overlanding with a budget daily driver is doable to a certain degree.
Nothing says camping quite like drip coffee from an old fashioned drip pot, not a percolator. I found a 64 year old beauty last week, a WestBend Lifetime 18-8 stainless steel 10 cup drip coffee pot. This thing looks as good as the day it was made. Wow what a score. No doubt I can pass this down...
Well, I was sold on a Solo Bonfire when we were caught in a driving downpour, high winds, and temp in the mid 30's. Once it started the rain couldn't put it out. We sat under an Easy-Up Awning...dry...and warm. Keep a Solo Bonfire on my RTT trailer, and a Solo Ranger in my Travel Trailer. My...
Our 2017 Winnebago Drop 170S was stolen. Two days ago we get a call from our campground in Wears Valley Tennessee telling us our Winnie was scarfed by some dirtbag hillbillies. Just finished a 6 month prep job to get it ready for our Alaska trip this summer...well if Canada reopens. Anyway, we...
Got my GMRS a week and a half ago, and yes it was still $70. But went ahead anyway...while you still could get one. At the rate internet sites were being shut down, GMRS and Ham are about the only options available. For now.
I bought one last year to see how it worked out, and low and behold my wife tried it and confiscated it. So, the second one arrived on my front porch yesterday. Yeah, I like it. Both stay in the GX permanently.
In my EDC Pack, a Leatherman
In my GX and used for all overlanding trips, Gerber StrongArm
Carried in my pocket, a SOG Aegis, and a Victorinox on my keychain
No problems yet, knock on wood. After the axle swap and bigger tires/wheels it has plenty of clearance. I’ve taken it on a few rough trails but was somewhat cautious. I’m sure a heavy diet of rough trails might not be wise but I wouldn’t hesitate to hit the road for Alaska right now.
I welded 2 bars to the top to mount my RTT and it added a good deal of extra rigidity. Will eventually diamond plate it. Taken it on a few trails in the Talladega NF and the Bankhead NF. Just take my time and it does OK. It ain't a Turtleback, but that's OK, too. Loaded with my Solo firepit...
