  • Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

    Pismo Sand

@Joaquin Suave OSPHO. Stuff is better than magic. It will destroy paint, though. Weight is probably the most important factor on sand. Wide, shallow-cut tires and light weight will get you far. Airing down will get you farther. Go as fast as possible and as slow as necessary!

    US Southeast Uwharrie Weekend Run

@danwyandt Of course, we don't want him to sustain any body damage! I'll be sticking to the easy and moderate trails, and if anybody's scared, they can always ride shotgun with somebody else on that trail and see if they want to chance it.

@toolsforwar That a Montero, or a Pajero? Don't know my Mitsubishi's too well, but I know they're very capable. Looking sharp!

@Carnage_95YJ I don't have 'em either, I didn't need them last year, and I won't need them this year - on all but the toughest trails, you won't really even need more than a 1-2" lift and some A/T's. If you're scared of an obstacle, many trails have bypasses, and turning around is easy. And...

Getting some much-needed maintenance done on my tow rig this week, she's got to be in top shape by summer! Hopefully will have a new set of tires on her before this trip. Never much liked the tires the previous owner put on.

    Pismo Sand

@WesternDirtRoads People who haven't done it, don't understand what it is driving on sand; it's unlike any other terrain really. Very unforgiving. Many rookies think that deep, aggressive tread patterns help in sand, but speaking from experience, aired down road tires probably fare just as well...

    LR3 vs LR4

I just brought up XTerra's as a joke, because of the price. LR's and XTerra's are different machines for different uses, both happen to be capable of many of the same things. The LR costs more and has better manners because it is a much more sophisticated design. As to which is more capable -...

@reaver I thought you'd get a kick out of it! This one looks a bit more your speed, eh? The other one was a dedicated toy, this one is a travel rig.

    Lets see some trail photos!

The weirdest thing about some trails is finding where they end.

How 'bout something of this sort?

@reaver Not mine, but check out this beast of an XTerra.

    FNG in Lake Wylie, SC

@Thomas Hastings Kayaks, that should be a bit easier on the back! Walking and hiking is definitely more relaxing than motor sports, and much quieter too, so you can encounter more wildlife, if that's what you're into!

What is YOUR ultimate overland setup, and why?

@reaver A good question; largely a subjective discussion, since each individual has different usage habits! I'd start with a 2nd-gen Ford Explorer 4x4 for cheap reliability and sturdiness. I have 2 of them already and love 'em both! Huge windows make them perfect for sightseeing. Gotta have...

    New from NC

@Sejhorv8 Not sure if you saw it, but there's a Rally Point for a Uwharrie run in July... if you're interested, check it out!

    FNG in Lake Wylie, SC

@Thomas Hastings Looks like a great setup for heavy camping! Have you considered buying some dirt bikes or some thing to scout around, or do you prefer other activities when traveling? Seems like you could lug them in your truck bed without using up all of your cargo space.

    New Member From SC/NC

@Importman I'm a bit late to this game, but welcome to OB1! Western NC is a great spot, there's no shortage of good wheeling out there, plus the Uwharries if you ever feel like some thing more hardcore. Tellico is a bit out of my region, but if you fancy a challenge, may be check it out some time.

@SJ.Overland I see, thanks. (I think number of attendees is down from 12 to 10, looking more closely.)

I received a second invitation to this same event, is that meant to be possible?

    Off-road alone.

@AndrewW said it best. Sharing solitude with someone who also appreciates it - being alone, together, if you will - is absolutely the best possible experience. A song called "If" (Bread) comes to mind. I too know the game of trying to share an experience, but everybody else is too busy...

    Off-road alone.

@PapaDave "...the risk of emotional intimacy became more attractive than the predictability of loneliness." True words, my friend. True words. Many people experiencing loneliness are quite busy with social interactions, but are lonely because none of those interactions is meaningful to them...
