Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
@SoCoRuss So, did you get the answer to your question? Is the overlanding community killing itself?
Methinks not, because each member of the community is still doing what he does, regardless of the rest of the community. Nobody here seems to feel pressured to change, or excluded because he...
@CR-Venturer Keep your head up, at least you found these problems when you weren't on a month-long trip out of state, or some such. Even the inconveniences are often blessings, since they could be a lot more inconvenient.
Make a list... and check parts associated with parts that need replaced...
@Dysan Best idea there, take it slow and easy and do your research. Trailhawk is a good pick for capability, but I don't know how well they will hold up in the long run, being so new.
@NV Ranger I would definitely not rebuild my rig. Overbuilding on every front made it almost unusable for daily driving, so I bought another one to keep moderate. Basically, I'm already starting over, just didn't lose the first one!
2" lift, 31" tires, done. May be a hitch receiver and some...
In any case, the fact is that if you're going to look at any community, there is going to be divisions about who is doing it right and who is doing it wrong, and the vast majority of these divisions will be over matters of opinion.
The actual overlanding community is not doing itself any harm...
@OVRLNDCBR Just use her for a while, you'll figure out a suitable name. Backpack is a good start.
My trucks' names...
1999 Ford Explorer, The Vulture. Named for being a salvage vehicle built largely with salvage parts. Vultures are scavengers, making use of others' refuse.
2003 Dodge Durango...
@Dysan All solid options, but if you're going to really take it off-road in the future, go ahead and scratch the Explorer off the list. No hate on the newer Explorers, just they aren't in the game with the others listed as far as hardcore wheeling is concerned. FWD-based means limited towing...
I think some of the fellas here are missing the point. Perhaps @SoCoRuss could have better addressed the issue by challenging the competitiveness of the community's opposing factions, the "simple" versus the "complex" overlanders.
The simple guys hate on the complex guys, saying we can get the...
@ZombieCat True and false, if they're not killing their own deer to keep in their on-board refrigerators and refining their own propane for the stove, then they're not self-reliant. And if they are, they had better have built that car from steel they mined themselves, or they still aren't...
Last, half a tank of gas. Next, lunch for a lady.
What? The title didn't mention cars. (But the first post did, so let's not derail too much!)
Last, lift kit and shock absorbers for tow rig. Next, bearings, hubs, and tires for tow rig!
@Eily Nice setup! Looks like you've got the right toy for the job. Poke around on here a bit and you'll undoubtedly find new places to go, and people to go with!
@Dilldog No! I live in a region with limited off-roading access. I drive my toy once a week to keep it running for the once or twice a year I actually use it for what I built it for.
On those yearly occasions, I tow it behind a much more moderately upgraded vehicle that rarely sees even gravel...
This. End of discussion.
Nobody is making it any more expensive than you want to spend. If you want good quality products, you pay good quality prices. If you want gimmicky products, you pay gimmicky prices!
I paid $2000 for my toy truck (before mods) and got my tow rig for the cost of getting...
@MrWilsonWJ I looked at Toyo Open Country tires, but they're not the kind of tread I'm looking for. Not that I don't want them - the pattern is awesome.
@OTG_one Again, this is what I wanted to hear! To judge by price alone, Maxxis seems to be generally proud of its products. I did know that it originated with bike tires and later moved into the automotive field, but I wasn't aware that its products were used widely in competition. Up with Toyo...
Got a small collection.
1999 Ford Explorer Sport, dedicated toy. First car, bought stock. Superlift, Old Man Emu, and RTZ parts make up a 5" front and 4" rear lift. Hitch receivers front and rear. 5.13 gears and 33x12.50 Nitto Trail Grapplers. Needs a crash bar!
2003 Dodge Durango SLT, heavy...
@MrWilsonWJ Thanks, this is the sort of info I'm looking for.
An acquaintance of mine has used Falken Wildpeaks and Cooper Discoverers, and I've had excellent service from Goodyear tires in the past. Haven't heard much about Maxxis, but have a fat set of Nitto Trail Grapplers on my toy. Nitto...
@Red_Leaf_Overland Quite the impressive set of photographs you've got there! Even more astounding is the fact that no photograph can begin to capture the magnificence of the real experience.
Keep doing what you do, guy. The experience is worth it, even though photographs get lost and memories fade.
