Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
How many in your group, where are you going, what are you driving & how many people in each vehicle? There is a wealth of great advice & opinion on these forums, but we need just a bit of basic information in order to help. One thing- always be prepared for the worst case scenario. Which might...
We use a Rand McNally road atlas of North America for the big picture and keep it handy. Before a trip we pack topo/trail maps from Nat Geo, NF, NP, BLM or any other published maps for the locales we will be in. Sometimes we will have 9-12 local topo maps. While traveling the paper maps are...
Sadly; even though I’ve never dealt with RV dealerships I loath them. Once the sale is made they could give 2 shakes about customer service. That’s their reputation and I’m sticking with it. Good luck!
I’d go with a Dexter axle & leaf springs with shocks. Why? Here in North America you can go into any Napa, Agricultural store, camper or trailer supply retailer and find an axle, springs, shocks, bearings.
Lighten up Francis. Two guys show up at the gas station at the same time, both in decked out overlanding rigs. In this case, his a 110, mine an 80. It happens a lot out west during our travels and there is always a pleasant exchange between two guys that obviously have a lot in common. I...
. There’s a guy lives up the hill from me, drives a new 110. He’s got every conceivable thing bolted onto it to the point of hilarity. It’s way too top heavy and leans hard going around corners. It also sits lower than our RAV4. Being polite I would wave at him and get no response. I was...
Well, I did use it to pull up some fence posts, and lift the corner of the barn up. But yea, 4 times on the trail or highway. 3 times with the trailer and once for the old heep. I’ve got two floor jacks in the barn for maintenance work. The old one is a 3 ton heavy old iron jack, the other a...
Hmmm, interesting, I think you are generally correct, ours is a 7,000 lb vehicle and a 1500 lb trailer- loaded and about 200 lbs under GVWR. I’ve seen quite a few overlanding vehicles way overloaded.
Every time I figure out a way to lighten up a bit something else gets added. The heaviest things we carry are the tool bag about 40 lbs, and the 28lb high lift. We’ve used the highlift 4 times in 25 years. Thank goodness we had it. The tool kit? I’ve used wrenches & sockets on the trailer...
Hello Chip, I do not have experience with this company. Be sure to do your due diligence before plunking down big bucks for the unknown, which it looks like you are considering. If they want front money- walk away. There have been quite a few folks that have paid up front for gear and either...
We only use our annex in cold temps. The Mr Buddy heater sitting on a stool, burning on the lowest setting, with the door slit open an inch or two and the rear window up top opened up a bit, kept us quite warm in teen degree weather. I shut it off after the last “squirt the dirt walk” and...
Well, we just camped for 7 of the past 9 weeks is heavy grizzly bear territory and did not see a single one. A black bear wandered by our camp within about 50 yards one afternoon, but because he did not associate people with free food, he just kept on sauntering by. Friends of ours...
We’ve been camping in bear country forever and have never had even the slightest of encounters. Keeping your campsite anally retentivley clean is the most important thing one can do. Not just cleaning up after a meal, but keeping everything cleaned up & orderly as you go. Example- Want some...
Interesting concept, however, being the overlanding curmudgeon that I am and since I depend on no digital mapping tools, I leave breadcrumbs. Actually, my wife is amazed at how well I remember where I have driven before, sometimes years later. We were recently out with a fellow traveler that...
I’ve been driving Ford Pickups since 1970. Back then it was a 64 F100 used on our farm. Then we got a new 70’ the fall of 69 and I got to drive that once in a while. I bought my own 64’ F-100 in ‘74 and and in ‘77 I had a ‘60 . F100. I’ve since owned several more after that and currently...
Agree completely. The other couple that traveled with us were very cool about everything, they’d explore in their vehicle while we would go hiking, they went on a boat tour while we did something else, getting together in the evenings for conversation, comradery & libations. When our kids travel...
