If you enjoy what you do, no sense in stopping it. I know of baseball talent scouts of the payroll that are in their 80s still at it and loving it. I’ve been meaning to ask- did you ever meet Jerry Branford, the TJ guru? I used to get into mild debates with him. All in fun and hoping to...

    Buy new or buy used.

Ya, before I retired I thought I wanted to buy, refurbish & sell old cars- then I bought the 80, which became a hobby unto itself. When I was very young I learned to work on cars & pickups out of necessity, later on in life, I saw no sense in paying a mechanic $25 an hour to do what I could...

the new thing is great, almost too much storage as we are right at FoMoCo’s GVWR. Tipping the CAT scales at 10,920. Had a leveling kit installed this AM. I’m sure over the next couple of months we will get its weight down. Currently in RI for a grandsons graduation. Sure is nice to have a...

Having said this and agreeing with most all the comments, I am currently in a brand new truck with a bumper to bumper warranty for 150k miles. However, it is a bare bones F350 XL FX4. A great truck for full timing in and I don’t have to be concerned with turning any wrenches.

I’m gonna bust a big myth here with some raw numbers. The myth being that older vehicles are very expensive to operate & maintain. 12 years ago I purchased a 96 LC 80 series, triple locked, etc etc. for 11 thousand dollars. The truck was rust free and had just been baselined by a custom shop...

What is the difference of full-time overlanding?

agreed- so many times as part timers we seemingly blew through areas, not really experiencing them. On a trip up north a couple summers ago a member of our party just wanted to go go go go, and then complain that he saw no wildlife or complain that the indigenous people were not very friendly...

What is the difference of full-time overlanding?

Very very slow- today we did - almost nothing- went for a slow walk in the woods and discovered a very rare artifact from the previous century. I was taken aback that it still worked.

What is the difference of full-time overlanding?

After only three nites in our new unit I’m thankful that we were somewhat experienced as long range part timers. All the little cubby holes & stowage spaces have filled up fast with a commonsencical approach. For example- my big heavy tool bag has found its way to the very bottom of a...

New Build for Full Time old duffers.

We are almost ready to go, I must install a power inverter, ( short story on that debacle later, dependent upon how Mainline Overland rectifies their mistake ) and move all of our interior gear into it today & tomorrow, as we are heading out Monday morning.

How do you fund your expeditions?

Quit your job, sell everythkng, buy a jeep, start a YouTube channel. Oh? Funding? That’s easy, Guilt your wealthy parents into paying for it all so that you can “ discover “ yourself!! Then go out and you be you, you’ll develope millions of followers seemingly overnite and never have to...

    The worst part of adventure

We traveled literally over 100,000 miles towing an expo trailer with tires & wheels that matched the tow vehicle, Using one spare tire that got rotated in. Never had a flat. I would advise to save space & weight by standardizing and rotating 7 tires.

What is the difference of full-time overlanding?

Yes & yes, I know that because our home is Me-Shell, we will not be going to a lot of places that we previously ventured to in our 80 series. Our planning will be on point and we will be taking the proverbial fork in the road a little less often. Very wise words from a very young Kelsey...

New Build for Full Time old duffers.

Good question; witnessing others struggling with getting a tire out from underneath a heavy vehicle in an off camper situation and having to jack the vehicle up to get the tire out is one reason. Another is that we now have a huge amount of room for an additional water tank.

New Build for Full Time old duffers.

The 4WC is being installed this week. Before we dropped the truck off I took care of the inevitable mudflap problem. This solution will keep them from wrapping up while on washboard roads or getting pinched while reversing on any technical roads. I’m pleased with how the bed looks.

    What car? Need expert opinion

only petro motors here in the states except one jeep with the 2.8 Motori. The high pressure fuel pump failed just out of warranty- $4,000 dollar repair. In general though, jeep suspensions do not have a long lifespan.

    What car? Need expert opinion

I’ve owned 5 jeeps over the decades , and learned the hard way that JEEP is an acronym for Just Empty Every Pocket. I kept buying jeeps because I never thought I could afford a Toyota. Then 12 years ago sold my last one, a 10 year old Rubicon and I bought a 1996 Landcruiser 80 series and...

Have you converted to all Electric and no Gas

We’ll have 400 ah of battery- 400 watts of solar- plenty to run the fridge, the separate freezer, water pumps, chargers, Starlink, computers, etc etc. we considered electric for cooking, but we’ve got great cookware and would have to change all that out. Maybe in our future.
