Welcome to the forum from West Texas. I'll bet you'll have plenty of people on here that can give you much more specific advise than me as to where to start on an Xterra build out. My advice would be to get out on an adventure, see what you already have that you like or don't like and go from there.
I've got a little over 192k on the little 2.5L ... We'll see how long it lasts.
If your going to come all the way to Texas to see Jinks, Rogers or others, you'd be just close enough to turn it into a trip to Big Bend NP. :-)
Welcome to the forum from West Texas. I picked up a '99 TJ about 10 months ago. It has turned into my "run around town" vehicle as I don't trust the engine to survive much longer.
Your trip planned for May sounds exciting, as does the one in September. Good luck with both of those adventures.
I would suggest looking at Scepter water cans for a BPA-free, jerry can design. Can be found on Amazon.
Affordability might be subjective though, for some of their products.
One solution for warmer weather that I have used is a hammock. Packs light, even models with built in netting.
I must say that I do prefer a tent though as I pretty much always have my camping buddy (Labrador Retriever) with me now a days.
