Oh HECK yeah, this is my kinda thread! I always have an HF radio on me when i'm out adventuring. I'll either set it up at camp, or hike to a nearby SOTA summit and set it up for those tasty tasty activation points. I run an Elecraft KX2 as my primary radio driving up to 12 whole watts into a...
This past Friday night we slept in the Mojave Desert and woke up in the middle of the night to a complete downpour, had to pack up in the rain in the morning as well. When we went to set up camp at the next location on Saturday evening, I opened up the RTT cover and unstrapped the velcro tie...
I'm reposting this here in case there are attendees who are not also reading the Arizona Overlander's thread. There is a convoy from the Phoenix area being organized by @AZBubs:
OK. Valley residents wanting to caravan: 0630-0700 @ REI Lot off of I-10 & Ray. On the Road @ 0700 (ish). Oct 20th
We had an epic view from the edge of the storms while camped on the western edge of KOFA this saturday on the last night of our 11-day adventure around CA and AZ
Great! With the tablet, just be sure to get one that is GPS enabled (typically these are the ones that can be used through a cell phone service, although you don't _need_ to have it hooked up to a cell provider). If you end up with a WiFi-only tablet, you may need to get a bluetooth GPS receiver...
I'm curious why you won't ever own a tablet, especially considering they are generally, the best option for GPS navigation, routing, tracking, and import/export features. All the major mapping apps also allow you to overlay map layers and meta-data overlays and such (like public land vs private...
Last Wed night I managed to get the drawer system all installed and wired into Jolene in time to head out Thursday morning to start working our way north towards the Overland Bound West Rally. Turned out "good enough". I also wired in an RGB LED strip which is a total game changer. We've been...
WARNING: Hopefully it will never happen, but if for some unfortunate reason your passenger airbag goes off, that IPad may become a projectile possibly headed directly at the driver's head. I have a similar setup, but I have mounted my tablet just a bit higher and just a bit farther towards the...
Welcome, I'm down in Tucson!
We have a good strong membership here in Arizona. Come say hi in the Arizona Overlanders thread, and consider driving down to Tucson for the upcoming October 20th Rigs and Coffee Meet and Greet. There is a convoy planned from the Phoenix area for those who want to...

Thanks @CCTX50!
I know what you mean about the crazy cost of most sliders. Thankfully I kind of lucked out and participated in a promotion for a parts supplier where I was refunded the full cost of my slider in return for writing the install guide for it. Win win!
Have fun at the TX Outdoor...
I just looked over Corrie's playbook for the event and noticed that check in starts at 1pm instead of 3pm as mentioned on the registration page. Because of this, we may try to roll out of camp even earlier on Friday morning. Maybe before 7pm if we can, anyway, we can discuss at camp what we want...
@gabe I definitely don't have the skills, hah. I love doing the electrical stuff, but this cabinet building is _really_ hard :( I actually scrapped the one in that photo above and redid the main surround in 3/4 in plywood. Here it is in its current...
Welcome, @Wolf28! I'm down in Tucson. Come say hi in the Arizona Overlanders thread, and if you can make it, I'm hosting a Rigs and Coffee Meetup down here in Tucson on October 20th
Update: @AZ Explorer and I will meet up at the Love's Travel Center at 7001 W Sundust Rd, Chandler, AZ 85226 at around 10:30am. As i'll be coming up from Tucson, the timing may be a little before or after 10:30, but it shouldn't vary too much. We haven't heard from anybody else heading up, so if...
@YPD1 will also be attending, but he's working Thursday and coming from Yuma. He'll be trying to connect with us either at camp or on the way up. Last year there were only a handful in the convoy as well. I think the long haul up to Shaver Lake is unappealing to many people.
@jim SoG it depends a bit on whether anybody else will be joining us, but we'll probably aim to arrive at camp by 4pm or so. Enough time to let the kids run around and play a bit before nightfall.
Here's the campsite we'll be heading for. This is the same one we used last year. Note: there are a number of dispersed spots around here, and they are first come first served. I'll try to head to the one marked by this waypoint, but if it's taken, we'll just head to one nearby. Look for our...
