    Do you use your awning?

I have an awning but still find myself setting up an additional DIY awning fairly regularly. Here's what i've found to work really well: Get a cheapo tarp (whatever size you want, but i typically use one of those 8-10ish feet square ones. I use two to three of those tarp ball bungees to attach...

2016 JKU Rubicon hard rock build

It's quite a bit more $$$ (~$560 vs ~$280 for the Yaesu 7900), but take a look at the Kenwood TM-D710GA as well. It has built-in GPS and APRS for real time location pings and text messaging, cross band repeat, a built in digipeater for data connections, and a direct connection to a PC if you...

    Ask About Gaia GPS!

Out of curiosity, I checked the docs and it does support AFSK audio directly between the phone and the radio. the downside to this is that if someone doesn't have their phone in silent, and they get a text or something, the notification sound will be sent over to the radio and broadcasted. So...

    Ask About Gaia GPS!

nope, just a radio. APRSDroid acts as the encoder/decoder and GPS on your phone. i suppose if we want to be technical, you also need an audio cable to connect your radio to your phone I personally use a bluetooth TNC as well, but i'm 98% certain it's not required.

    Off the Grid 2018 - Arizona Convoy - 10/04/2018

The event is: Friday arrival, Saturday trail day, Sunday head out, so three days total. We add a fourth to get there, and likely a fifth to get back - although this convoy is only for the trip THERE, as some people, including myself, do not return directly back to AZ after the event.

    Ask About Gaia GPS!

I'll take this opportunity to pimp this pending Gaia feature request we've been pushing for 7months now: https://help.gaiagps.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115008857887-APRSdroid-integration- The request is for Gaia to add APRSDroid support to the Android app so that we can use APRS to track...

@Steve @Michael Ugh, i just noticed that the Rally point event itself is now pointing to this thread instead of that other one, which i've linked to in other places already as well :/

    Off the Grid 2018 - Arizona Convoy - 10/04/2018

@Steve @Michael I created a rally point, which correctly created a thread in the forums, I then had to edit the rally point and when i saved, it created this thread, which is a duplicate. Just wanted to give a heads up. This thread can be deleted, but I left it in place in case it helps with...

Registration: Off the Grid Rally West 2018 The plan will be roughly the same as last year with some slight variation. The plan will be to leave northwest side of Tucson in the morning, possible pickup stop in the Phoenix area, and a final collection of any northern AZ folks in the Prescott...

Overland East 2018 - Anyone from our region considering?

We cleared up some schedule conflicts and are now able to attend Off The Grid West again this year! We'll be at Shaver Lake October 5-7th for the event, and then we'll probably bop up to the bay area for a few days to say hi to friends and family in S.F. before working our way back to Baja...

    "Off the Grid" 2018 (Un-official)

We just realized that fall break for the kids was the week following OTG and we had been planning on taking a long trip over fall break. Those two conflicts won out over the wedding. It helps that my wife wasn't very keen on attending the wedding, as she would't know anybody there, and I only...

Overland East 2018 - Anyone from our region considering?

Colorado in October might be a possibility. As the wife and I were just talking ideas for that 10/11-day block we have in Oct, we realized we have some coordination to work out, we AirBnB our guesthouse and there's two bookings during that time, but i'll keep you posted!

Overland East 2018 - Anyone from our region considering?

We'll find a time, i'm sure. We are going to do something over Memorial Day weekend as well as when we pick up some new equipment towards the end of Sept. I'll be wanting to break it in so i'm certain i'll be heading out somewhere for that, too, especially since the kids have fall break off at...

At this point I'm an "OUT". I just don't think I can pull it off with the timing of our bigger MX trip that will start the following week.
