Some (or possibly all?) of the handhelds sold in the big box stores may just be FRS radios, which share the same frequency channels but do NOT require a license because they only transmit 2W maximum. I always carry extra FRS radios in my rig so that i can hand them out to anybody in the group...
Some of us are giving sensible advice from actual first hand experience and familiarity of traveling into Mexico, crossing the border, and traveling all along the border on both sides on a fairly regular basis. Like OP said, he's not scared of traveling in MX, he's mostly concerned about this...
I have a few antennas on my vehicle, one of them being a Nagoya dual band mag mount. The mag mount has been on the rig the longest, at just about two years, and it still performs great!
not to derail this thread too much, but there was a really interesting and entertaining Planet Money podcast recently that goes into this and kind of how we got here. Worth a quick listen or read if you are interested in learning more about the details, it's pretty entertaining...
Fellow Arizonan here, you'll be fine, especially in Baja which is very safe not a "hot zone" by any stretch of the imagination.
I'm driving from AZ into mainland Mexico (Sonora, Sinaloa (this is definitely a "hot zone"), then a ferry over to La Paz) in a few weeks and I also have zero...
146.46 (and especially 146.52, the national calling frequency) are generally accepted "calling frequencies" the whole point of these frequencies is to make initial contact to see who's out there. Using a calling frequency is not a bad idea, in fact, it is the accepted best practice among hams to...
@dougie117
Yep! That's in the plan. Right now we have ~34" tires and that 13gal tank. We rarely keep fuel in that tank to keep the weight down. There have only been two times where we've fueled it up because we knew that the planned route took us far enough from gas station range. all other...
@1Louder @Kent R
The idea of 146.46 as the "OB frequency" is purely for making "first contact" After that people would, and should, move to a separate simplex frequency in most situations. I think driving people to get their ham license is still a much better approach than having some oddball...
What self study course are you following? Here's my thoughts, and the advice I give to every aspiring ham i've helped: Don't try to understand the test material, don't try to figure out the radio yet, just MEMORIZE the question pool and pass the first test as soon as possible. You won't be able...
From some of the benchmarks i've seen, i suspect it would be just fine running all of that and doing inserts at greater than 1/sec. I know i've seen projects with RPi Zeros that are serving and processing real time video just fine, which is pretty darn CPU intensive. IMO, for ~$30 it's worth...
Yeah, for me it was primarily about the much more expansive and detailed data and control that was available via the CAN bus. Direct wired into the CAN bus, I can also write my own packets back into the network as well. With this extra access I can do things like:
1) have an event driven...
I can vouch for the RPi route. I've done something similar in my rig, although I read the more detailed and comprehensive CAN bus data directly from the vehicle's electronics network. It would be very easy to apply a very similar solution for capturing just the OBD-II data
My RPi is direct...
@AZBubs do you have any plan to now upgrade to your General license? The exam has a ton of overlap with the Technician, so if you have a desire to upgrade your privileges (HF is awesome) sooner is better so you retain all the stuff you studied for Technician
@AZBubs, congrats on your callsign finally coming through! Best advice I can give about now learning how to actually use radios is to hit up some local amateur radio club (ARC) meetings.
It looks like there's an ARC in Queen Creek: http://www.queencreekarc.org They don't appear to have regular...
Thank you everybody who came out for the extremely windy meetup yesterday! It was great to meet so many new faces! In the excitement of talking to all of you, I completely forgot to take any photos!
YES! This first meetup is just a parking lot "meet and greet" so we can all get to know each other. Going forward the plan is to plan these as actual adventures. Lets talk about Gila NF at the meetup, we may be able to coordinate an outing with some of our NM folks as well
This past weekend we were looking for a location for our last night of sleep on our 11-day adventure around CA and AZ After just being drenched by unexpected rain in the Mojave Desert overnight, we looked at satellite data and picked the one spot in Arizona where it looked like we could escape...
We have used AirLift 1000s in our JKU to support a bunch of weight that was causing a pretty severe sag. We only used them for a couple of weeks but they worked great. For $100 you can't go wrong. We have since swapped in a set of OME 2620 Heavy Lift rear coils, as the bags were just a temporary...
