I made my decision last year. The Bison is a great vote of support for Overlanding by Chevy, but the upgrades offered are really overpriced. My ZR2 diesel is outfitted similar to the SEMA-ARB mule (that wasn't drivable off-road). Here's a walk-around video and then piccies of a recent trip...
We just went camping in CO south of Telluride in the mountains and stayed in our trailer without the heat on. My wife and I were comfy in our sleeping bags, and Buck was comfy in a nest I made for him at the foot of the bed. In your rig, sounds like your dog would be fine if you used duffles...
Don't wait too long or you could miss it. The aspens are already turning on the mountains here in Taos. I just went camping in CO and drove from Dolores to Telluride over Lizard Head Pass. The leaves up there were incredible.
I believe Gaia has the private property overlay, with owner's name, as part of the Premium subscription. We had a Gaia workshop for our local SAR team tonight. I'm new to this and will definitely look into the Gaia Pro 1-yr. deal.
It's called "Rocky Canyon" for a reason. When we were there, most of the roadway up on the hills was smooth and well maintained and the lower areas were chock-a-block with rocks. If I remember correctly you can get to the campground OK, but in the immediate area and beyond it's really a rock...
Perfectly safe if you're even moderately cautious. I don't know where the accidents occurred, but only a couple of possibilities.
I must add a real tragedy in any event and a cautionary tale to those who venture off-road. You just can't treat these areas like you would an amusement park.
There was a Jeep rollover death on the Goose Lake road on Sunday, Sept. 2. A 63 yr. old Oklahoma man was killed and his grandson medivac'ed to ABQ. Cops say both ejected, neither wearing seat belts. About 4 years ago a 23 yr. old TX woman was killed and her brother injured in an ATV rollover...
Started with Herm Sprenger prong collar then using eCollar for recall on long line. He's getting the hang of it and a totally different dog at heel in town with the prong. We ran into a mtn. lion kill last week, then Buck sussed out the cat. Big cat growl. I called Buck off - which he...
Great article Jennifer! Sounds like you're really trying to think through as much as you can in advance with Monty. My wife and I won't be overlanding full time like you and Monty, but we're preparing in a similar way with our Chinook, Buck. Our niece is another part time overlander with her...
We camped at Havasupai after Expo West four years ago. Had a great trip. Had reservations on North Rim but didn't go when weather got bad. Here's a great writeup on the details of getting to the goods on the S. Rim and was very helpful to us picturing what we were going to experience...
Wish I'd been home and could have participated. Next time something going on in southern CO, I'll try to get there if you'll let someone from norther NM participate. I'll bring my passport. ;)
Beautiful stuff Don. And the plates bring a tear to my eye - similar to the ones my grandmother, originally from Kentucky, used as I was growing up in Ohio. And you've got your wood dialed in. We're not big fans of mesquite and prefer more pecan and apple for smoking. Love the slow cooked BBQ.
How many of you cook directly on coals? Or just off the coals on a grill? The thread on plow discs/skottles/woks got me thinking about this. I've never done dirty steak (cooking directly on embers of a fire), but we've cooked pizza on a Weber and now a Big Green Egg for years. Next time we...
My wife does the cooking. We have several dutch ovens and cast iron pans. Also, a large non-stick griddle. She's cooked on a wok at home and is a fairly brilliant camp chef. We have a large one burner Camp Chef grill that would work fine for a wok type plate...
I agree these are very good, basic trailers. And it's one of the few US dealers for the Australian made Ark XO Trailer Jack. But, they're only doing what's been done overseas for years - not that we could get them! The limitations of the Max Coupler, as one example, have been discussed in...
My wife and I were all hot to get a teardrop and looked at them at the Expo about 5 years ago. We both thought "coffin". GO TO THE EXPO and see what you think for yourself. Amazing stuff being done in Australia and South Africa. US mfgs. are 10 years behind these guys unless you're...
