    Solar problems

Ah, now I understand. No, it wasn't cold when I was fighting with it, about 100 degrees. Since the PWM box works, I hard wired it in and that's my solution to the solar issue.

    Solar problems

Patman, Yeah, I answered it, but it's buried up in the thread. I have the solar input into the yellow wire, per the wiring diagram ( the PWM controller is wired separately, direct to the batteries). The solar ground is a buss bar connected to the ground terminal of the starter battery with 2...

    Solar problems

I don't know what that means. NOT being a smart ass, I just don't know enough about solar. I have tried without the engine running (eliminate the alternator as a factor) and it still codes out. I tried a different panel with the same basic results, so I have given up on getting solar to run...

Are my wheels and tires big enough to off-road!?

Automatic short answer, yes. After I looked at what you have, I'm staying with that. Go out and run the wheels off it, tire size isn't going to stop you. Any significant change in tire size will necessitate other changes (and costs) like lift, gears, better brakes, etc. Nice truck!

    Decisions

I'd look at which one is in the best condition, to reduce expensive repairs later. Does one of them have better equipment (lockers, winch, aux battery, suspension, etc.) already? Are you going by yourself, or do you need room for passengers? Do you prefer a roof top tent, camper shell, trailer...

    Solar problems

One of the first things I learned about electrical problems is "it's always a bad ground". That's always a good question. With that in mind, my ground is a heavy (Blue seas 200 amp rated) buss bar connected directly to the vehicle battery with 2AWG OFC cable. The Redarc box, aux batteries, and...

    Solar problems

Well, I talked to the Redarc tech guys again, and the best they can come up with is try a different panel. Don't have another panel right now, but That seems to be the only thing left. I got an ammeter and checked the amps coming out of the panel, and they are all over the place from 1.1 to...

    Internal or external battery

Lithium batteries are pretty much considered the state of the art right now, but they are kind of pricey. Temperature can be a problem too, if you spend time in below freezing weather. Lots of bang for your buck, though. Lighter, and more usable amp hours than AGM or flooded batteries. We're...

    Solar problems

I have returned stuff, and got the same thing back in the past, so yeah that's a valid question. In this case, however, I still have the original box, they sent me a new one and said we'd sort out the return later. Really good customer support. And yeah, I've checked and re-checked all the...

    Solar problems

This is really interesting. My Redarc box is BCDC1240D. I think the "D" on the end indicates some sort of change, because the manual that came with it has an entirely different wiring diagram (attached). The instructions that came with the BCDC1240D show the red wire to vehicle power, black to...

    Solar problems

Actually tried that, taking the alternator out of the loop. Engine not running, circut breaker between the engine battery and the Redarc box open, plug in the panel. Faulted out, over voltage. Unplugged the panel, reset the box, plugged the panel in again. The box indicated "vehicle" input...

    Solar problems

First off, this is NOT a complaint against Redarc, they have been very helpful so far. I have a Redarc BCDC1240 charger in my van. I am running two 100ah 12V AGM batteries. For the last year I've been just using the vehicle charging aspect of the Redarc box, I didn't have a solar panel. It has...

    Our van build

I'm going back to the 4X4 shop the 22nd to get some upgraded radius arm mounts, and they're replacing the front coils with heavier springs & air bags. In my opinion, the front is just not stiff enough (hits the bump stops a lot on rough ground). Let me know how the Alcan spring deal goes...

    Our van build

Thanks. Obviously I'm not completely finished with everything yet, but getting closer. Once I build the bumpers, get the awning and winch, and build the rear gas tank, I think it will be more like 9000. I'm a little stumped, I've been trying to keep the weight pretty even front to rear, but...

    Our van build

It's pretty handy for things I don't want inside, but it's so high (10') that I kind of need to climb halfway up and have my wife hand me the stuff I'm putting up there. I really need to get cracking on the back bumper/spare mount, so I can get the spare off the rack. Get some weight down lower...

Whipped up a shovel/axe mount and some bigger bump stops.

That ol' girl does hug the ground! I might be happier in big ruts and rocks, but you'll be happier on any reasonable road, definitely in cross-winds!
