Ditch the CB entirely or stow it?

Bottom line: I have the compact Cobra CB with all the controls in the mic. I just bought the midland mxt275, which is the GMRS equivalent. I realize most are moving towards GMRS over CB for overland/off-road comms, but I've found value in having the CB during road trips for traffic updates...

    Friday Night HAM Radio NET

Yeah, I checked the site. None of the options listed are available on pi-star from what I'm seeing.

    Friday Night HAM Radio NET

Is there a way to get in via a hot spot like a pi-star?

    APRS RADAR

No, GPS does not have to be turned on. You could be beaconing packets for a fixed location. The only real requirement is to have CTCSS on. That said, if you were using the HT in a vehicle, I'd turn it on and use a 12v car charger to keep the battery topped off.

    Manual Sway Bar Disconnects

For those who do not have a Rubicon or Power Wagon, what are some ways that you guys make sure you remember to reconnect your sway bar before hitting the pavement again? I know Rubicons and Power Wagons have an indicator on the dash for this purpose, but I won't have that being in a Sport...

    APRS RADAR

I was confusing the 300 and 350 as well!

    APRS RADAR

I don't believe they do, however I purchased a mobilinkd2 a while back to use the APRSdroid interface wirelessly.

    APRS RADAR

How do you like the 350? I'm considering installing a radio in my trailer so I have a base camp comm set up. Initially I was thinking of using the 400, but the 350 intrigues me a bit.

Must a fridge be hard-wired in?

I believe most of them are totally fine to run off a 12v plug. I had an old XJ Cherokee and ran a 12v extension cord from the front to the cargo area in the back and ran my dometic that way just fine. I brought 4 quarts of specialty ice cream all the way from Ithaca, NY to Louisville, KY for my...

    APRS RADAR

Interesting! I'll have to look into that.

    Handheld cb

Respectfully, no way a handheld FRS/GMRS radio is getting a 27 mile simplex range under anything but extraordinary circumstances, such as mountain top to mountain top, or over open water.

    APRS RADAR

I'm not familiar with frequency alert, but yes, voice alert should work on any radio capable of CTCSS/tone squelch. (Obviously some form of APRS is necessary too, whether built in to the radio, or with a separate TNC and interface such as APRSdroid.) Thanks for the response!

    APRS RADAR

I recently learned a new trick with APRS that essentially gives you a form of Radio Detection and Ranging (RADAR) through APRS! It's called Voice Alert. If you run APRS and are anything like me, you probably either turn your volume down or enable a mute function so you don't have to listen to...

    Anyone using APRS?

It's definitely a neat feature. I've read plenty of stories about guys using it in conjunction with the digipeater on the International Space Station to send their wives an update on their hunting/fishing trip, etc when they had no cell service.

    Anyone using APRS?

Yup, that's correct. You just send the message to "SMSGTE" and in the body of the message you write "@1234567890" for the phone number you want it to go to, and then immediately after that whatever you want the message to say. You can create aliases for phone numbers on the SMS gateway website...

    Anyone using APRS?

You could use SMSGTE to try to send yourself or someone you know a text message. That would be an easy way to test it. You can also message WXBOT and say something like "Chicago, full." It will respond with a forecast if it's up and running.

    Overlanding and DMR/D-Star/etc.?

I learned a lot by watching YouTube videos by Ham Radio Concepts and Ham Radio Crash Course, among others. Those are two of the more informative channels though.

    Overlanding and DMR/D-Star/etc.?

If you're going out on trail runs, a Wires-X room probably isn't your best option since you absolutely WILL need internet. That said, you can use fusion in a simplex mode with Group Monitor to see who all is in range of you. It will essentially work in a manner similar to how you are having the...

OB Approved Overland Bound Comms Frequency Guide

I don't know if you've heard, but they're allowing "remote testing" now. Might be worth looking into.

OB Approved Overland Bound Comms Frequency Guide

Fair enough. I'll program that one in as well. Thanks for the response!
