US Southeast Planning our first trip

I wouldn't even begin to attempt Danniel, but what I've heard them call "Little Danniel," the controlling obstacle on Dickie Bell is very doable in a WK2, and that's what the Badge of Honor is for. And IIRC there's a slightly easier approach to it for lesser equipped vehicles. My best climb was...

US Southeast Planning our first trip

I have freecampsites.net bookmarked, and i have iOverlander in my tablet as well, so as long as I'm in cell range I can always check those I guess. My Jeep is a 2018 Trailhawk edition Grand Cherokee. It's fitted with 31" Falken Wildpeaks (265/65-R18) with 1 inch spacers, a steel lower front...

US Southeast Planning our first trip

Well the first big question is regarding primitive campsites and how to find them in peak season. I'm afraid of driving for hours only to find every spot full and then having to do the Drive of Shame to find a motel for the night. The next issue is concerning the back roads. Even though I have a...

US Southeast Planning our first trip

That would be wonderful! I'm at the point in trip planning where I don't even know what I don't know. It looks so easy on YouTube when you know where to point your vehicle, and doubly so if you're in a state that's made up of mostly public land. Coming from New Jersey and only able to go out for...

HAM Radio Call Sign Check-In Thread

I'm the one teaching the class :) I'm Extra Class, and have been licensed since 1979! I thought this would be a good way to get perspective ham overlanders involved.

I'm combining a weekend overland camping trip and a Technician license class in August. Perfect combo.

US Southeast Planning our first trip

Sounds like what I'm looking for, indeed. If we go out for a week then we're bound to need places on Friday and Saturday (and probably Sunday), so what's the best way to ensure we're not stuck for a spot? That's honestly my biggest worry.

US Southeast Planning our first trip

This sounds like a great area and I will definitely incorporate your suggestions in my ultimate plan. Any GPX files that I could load into Gaia, since I have never stepped foot in NC (and only once in VA) and don't really know my way around? Are campsites there of the primitive style or will we...

    Ham Radio Field Day

This year I'm the "hired gun" CW operator at a local club <grin>. I usually do 1E NNJ from my home station (70' tower, large Yagis, etc), ribs on the smoker, and a comfy bed nearby. I'm a contester and DXer and this is a fun little event that I try to do every year if possible. Next year...

Vanity Call Signs! What does YOURS mean?

W2IRT because I'm a fan of and have written a book on the New York City Subway system, where IRT stands for Interboro Rapid Transit--the numbered lines. My Canadian callsign is VE3THX, and I chose that because I was a motion picture projectionist for over 20 years, and the THX audio system was...

US Southeast Planning our first trip

So enough YouTube videos and buying supplies. It's time to start doing this for real. I'm trying to figure out a good route for about a week give or take. Living in Northeast New Jersey means a full day on the road to start out, and my thought was to go into the G.W. Nat'l forest around...

    NEBDR in a 4WD

Looking forward to your write-up. I'm still trying to find something up that way for a few days off pavement.

HAM Radio Call Sign Check-In Thread

Not sure if I checked into this thread when I registered on the site, but here goes. W2IRT, West Caldwell NJ. 41 years in amateur radio, contester/DXer and award chaser, and I love CW, but brand spanking new to this wonderful hobby of overlanding and offroading. Although it's been almost 18...

    NEBDR in a 4WD

Well first they've got to reopen the border, which I doubt will happen until September at the earliest, and probably not until next year. I would love to drive up through NB, NS, and then on the ferry to Newfoundland, but that's a month, minimum, and a ton of planning. I"m looking closer to home...

    Anything similar in VT?

    NEBDR in a 4WD

Are there any good places to either wild camp or other relatively primitive campsites (i.e. no RVs, etc)? Ideally I'd like to do this over 3 or 4 days with a nice secluded campsite to base out of for a couple of nights.

    NEBDR in a 4WD

Thanks Billiebob. I'm not so much concerned about budget, although that's always nice to find a free or nearly-free spot. But rather I'm really interested in getting some dirt and mud under my tires, and finding a nice lake or stream to camp beside for a few days--without trekking to the other...

Does anyone in the northeast use 146.460 MHz?

If you'd gone over to .52 you might have worked a few. I had a good QSO with a fellow in Chambersburg. He even sent me a QSL card in the mail (to which I replied this morning). Young fellow, IIRC he said he was 14 YO, but you'd never know it.

    NEBDR in a 4WD

Which then leads to the question of where does one find acceptable routes and back-country camping locations suitable for 4WD vehicles. This information is guarded tighter than Fort Knox. We can't afford the 4-6 weeks (minimum) that would be necessary to go out west any time soon, and driving on...

Does anyone in the northeast use 146.460 MHz?

Very much depends on where you are. In the NYC tri-state area there are repeaters on every pair...and virtually nobody using any of them. HF is almost non-existent up here too. Field Days are short-staffed, most contest stations are compromised (land for massive antenna farms around here would...
