how hard is it on the mid east coast to find good overlanding places?

We have four National Forests here in NC plus Cape Lookout and Cape Hatteras National Seashores so there is some opportunity for off-roading and dispersed camping (or, at least, minimally maintained dirt road driving). If you can get four days free, Cape Lookout may be worth the drive...

That makes me feel even better about my choice.

Deal on water cans (LCI) update with link to insulated carrier page 6

The last line under the 'Description' section for this item on the LCI website shows this to be an "AbilityOne Product". I'm not sure exactly what that means but I bought a MWC from Grainger a couple of years back that was stamped "AbilityOne" and "Property of US Government:". IIRC, the price...

    Whats your cooking source

The Bayou Classic 7488 shows up on Amazon from time to time @ $25-30. My Coleman 533 single burner fits nicely under it as a heat source when cooking on a picnic table and I've also used it over a bed of campfire embers. I still prefer my old liquid fuel 413E Coleman with Lodge frying pan...

Gas Lantern or Battery powered Lantern?

While in college in the mid sixties, I bought a Coleman 413E double burner stove and a 228J lantern at a yard sale; Both use liquid fuel and are likely well over seventy. These are sill my camping go to's for cooking and lighting, For those having problems with mantles and globes, Coleman...

    Camp Table

We bought a CampTime Roll-a-Table back in the early 80's and its still a part of our camping gear today. The top has a couple of burn marks and the pouches for the cross bars and legs are a bit ragged but still very solid and functional. The current models appear to have a re-designed pouch.

    US Southeast Smokeys/Cherokee NF

I'd suggest you pick up copies of the USFS maps for both Nantahala and Cherokee National Forests; there's a District Office in Robbinsville and the staff there have been very helpful in the past when I've asked for suggestions. Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest and the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock...

    Beach Driving and Corrosion

We live about a hundred miles inland from the NC coast and visit out Outer Banks (Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Seashores) at least monthly. Past vehicles were 05 and 12 Tacomas and current is a 19 ZR2. The Tacos both had over 150K when sold and neither suffered from rust damage...

    Overlanding Oven

That's looking pretty darned good for a rookie - well done sir!! Lanlubber - I have a fifties vintage Coleman liquid fuel 413E which is the largest of their two burner stoves, The oven fits nicely on the right (primary) burner with room on the left for an eight inch Lodge frying pan. Coffee...

    Overlanding Oven

Congrats. A couple of suggestions from my experience - Benchmark the door thermometer with one that's proven to be accurate as those from Coleman are notoriously unreliable. Place a fire tile or other solid mass on the bottom of the oven to achieve and hold more consistent temps (I use a piece...

    Texas routes

Big Bend Ranch State Park has more challenging back roads than those found in the National Park. Both are well worth a visit. Be sure to have dinner at the Starlight Theater in Terlingua.

    Planning my first “beach” trip

The Park Service cabins (Long Point) on the Portsmouth Island section will likely not re-open in 2021. There is a tentative plan to build new cabins further north on the island where they will be less susceptible to overwash and flooding but that is far from a done deal and likely won't happen...

    Gun Cases/Roof Rack Storage

I've had a Pelican gun case containing recovery gear on my TJ's roof rack for around twenty years with no problems. Its secured by "U-bolts" around the rack's rails with the nuts on the inside of the case and a padlock to keep anyone from easily opening it. No doubt, the contents could be...

What do you use for camp light?

Get back to me when your ‘massively improved’ lights have been around for over sixty years. The Coleman lantern and stove I bought at a yard sale during my sixties college days are still performing well. Agree with all of GrumpyRam’s reasons: there’s a great memory behind every scratch and...

"Pop Up" shelters and screen rooms

We've had a PahaQue 12'x12' screen room for around ten years and find it invaluable when camping on NC's Outer Banks (Bugs & Sun) and in the Smokies (Rain & Cold), If we'll be at a site two or more days, it usually goes up. These are no longer available but, when we replace it, my choice would...

Guadalupe Mountains National Park Texas (Looking for advice)

Not the OP but we have stayed in the area several times. There are two developed campgrounds in GUMO - Pine Spring and Dog Canyon. The first is pretty much a parking lot near the Park's Visitor Center and by far the more heavily used. At first glance, Dog Canyon doesn't look like too much...

Winch is it about the name?

I've had a M8000 Warn on my TJ for over twenty years and its been fairly solid. The control box has been replaced due to corrosion (lots of use on the NC Outer Banks) but the winch itself has been trouble free. Last year when I bought my Colorado, Chevy offered a dealer installed and...

    Access card denied

We were admitted to Yellowstone NP two years ago at no charge by showing my ID and Senior Pass. I've not been to all our National Parks but have made it to over half of them and have never had to pay an entrance fee since getting the geezer card some ten years back, We camped at Trail Creek, a...

    Planning my first “beach” trip

I'm not sure when the vehicle ferry services to Cape Lookout shut down for the winter. The Park Service cabins close around the end of November so you might want to check with the ferry concessionaires before getting too deep in your plans if that's your destination, It will likely be cold...
