On to the Schober Mine - or lack of. Once again it appeared that the audit had been blown shut and nothing but a few remnants remained.

This next portion I'm going to call "The Adventure of Dave's 4Runner". Rain, lots of driving and letting Dave take the lead didn't allow for much diversity with the photography. We backtracked down past Coyote Lake and rejoined the main trail. At the spit off we took 31E303 to the top of the...

As expected the trail became impassable and we were forced to head back down. Before doing so we hiked the rest of the way for a better view of the area. Looking north - Coyote Lake down below and the 8S18 in the distance Looking south-east toward Rocky Bottom and Funnel Lake.

ExploreDesert: Alabama Hills - Laurel Lakes - Mono Lake - Bodie - Coyote Flats

Saturday morning was a early start since we'd be making the haul back to Bishop for supplies in preparation for Coyote Flats. We made quick work of packing up camp and hitting the 395 south. Couldn't pass up Mahogany Meats along the way, although collectively we spend well over a couple hundred...

ExploreDesert: Alabama Hills - Laurel Lakes - Mono Lake - Bodie - Coyote Flats

We got lost within Bodie - more time was spent among the relics then was originally intended. It's one of those places where the more you look the more you find. Every building and section of the town had something new and interesting that captivated us. What a time to be alive! Old mining...

I bring them all since they're somewhat compact and fit inside a pelican case. The 18-200MM, 11-22MM & 8MM are the workhorses though, the others could technically stay at home.

Thanks! Got sucked into the Canon mirror-less lineup. Not the best and lots of compromises compared to other brands but the lenses are cheaper and kick ass. Most of the photos used here are done using the Tamron 18-200MM zoom since it's easy to get whatever focal length I need while on the move...

ExploreDesert: Alabama Hills - Laurel Lakes - Mono Lake - Bodie - Coyote Flats

Met up with the group on the other side of the highway and we made our way to Cottonwood Canyon Rd. The clouds we saw from a distance while driving around Mono Lake had intensified and were moving into our direct path. As we got closer the rain began - followed shortly by hail, then heavy...

ExploreDesert: Alabama Hills - Laurel Lakes - Mono Lake - Bodie - Coyote Flats

As it turns out, the Sierra's are riddled with flying insects. Even more so when around a body of water. That morning it was very apparent that the bug spray went on way too late and we were eaten for dinner by the lake locals. Red bumps and itching isn't the best way to start a fresh day - but...

What Trail Condition Do You Fear The Most?

I don't fear the mud, but definitely despise it and try to avoid it at all costs. Off camber while on a shelf road is my fear. The vehicle always feels like it's worse then it really is.

Thank you! Thanks! Thank you. Definitely do! Laurel Lakes is an amazing place. Hahaha. Yeah, we love our Toyota's. No video. I've thought about it but honestly too much work for our style of travel.

The kind of thing we must help stop.

Excuse my ignorance as I've never encountered a trail or signage like that, but what exactly is the issue?

ExploreDesert: Alabama Hills - Laurel Lakes - Mono Lake - Bodie - Coyote Flats

Coming up to the trail-head that leads to Laurel Lakes, there were a few vehicles in the parking area as well as a few people that appeared to be completing a day hiking throughout the local mountains. A bit further up a gentleman was walking up the trail with a gas can in a basic backpack which...

ExploreDesert: Alabama Hills - Laurel Lakes - Mono Lake - Bodie - Coyote Flats

The drive up to Bishop gave us some free time to research what last nights fireball was all about. Turned out to be the second stage from a Chinese rocket disintegrating in the atmosphere. How it just so happened to become visible at the "official" start of our trip was pretty cool. From Bishop...

ExploreDesert: Alabama Hills - Laurel Lakes - Mono Lake - Bodie - Coyote Flats

This trip to the Eastern Sierras was originally planned to take place last summer as a way for us desert dwellers to escape the heat. But as our departure time grew closer, personal plans began to change and ended up not working out. In a way, it was better that way - giving me time to refine...

OB Approved This is for everyone, OVERLANDING Safety in numbers!

Wow. Luck was on his side especially considering he didn't have a seat belt on and there we're others in the area. I've put myself in a few REALLY stupid situations in the past and thankfully learned without bodily or vehicle harm. It was those experiences that's lead to my overly cautious...

How well or detailed do you plan your trips? route/timeline/campspot

I love me some mapping and planning - to the point where it may be a problem haha. All of our trips are planned around reaching a new destination each evening and exploring POI along the way. I start by finding and drawing routes throughout the general area as well as marking primary way-points...
