    From Minnesota to Utah!

I sent a text to my brother on the border to border, here is his reply. A group of atv riders teamed up with some tree huggers formed a group in Cook county and named themselves “preserve our trails”, or something to that effect. They are pushing back making claims that millions or billions of...

Galaxy Tab or Apple iPad Mini?

Let me start by saying I gave up on android years ago and I’m sure it’s improved... In my experience Apple is easier to use and more stable. @v_man had a good point about the SD card, but honestly I’ve been surprised how little space Gaia maps have taken up in my O.G. iPad. When I switched to a...

    Treadwright Tires? Yay or nay?

My brother bought a set of 5 of the Treadwright Warden (BFG AT look alike) in 285/75/17 They were super heavy, took too much weight to balance and had a horrible ride. By the time he went through the trouble shooting process and determined it was the tires treadwright said he was past warranty...

Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, what to see?

There are SO many roads to drive in UT, but I’m too new here to tell you where to give you a must see list. We were on a 2 day trip through Capitol Reef, Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bryce Canyon last week. We stayed on the beaten path (my wife’s not super adventurous), but there were lots of...

Thoughts on a winch for an LR4?

I’ve got an LR3, but close enough for this discussion. I did a hidden install of a Smittybilt X2O 10k on a harbor freight winch plate. This was definitely the budget route, but it has served me well. Personally I would buy a full coverage winch bumper before I’d pay for a legit hidden winch mount.

    Gear bins?

I’ve also got the Plano boxes that I added weatherstripping to. I use two 108 quart boxes on the roof to hold all of our bulky camp gear (2 tents and 5 each sleeping bags, sleep pads and camp chairs)

    Lets talk navigation

I use a WiFi iPad with a Dual GPS receiver running the Gaia GPS app. It does everything you mentioned you’d like.

    From Minnesota to Utah!

We moved from Fergus Falls which is about 2/3 the way to Fargo from the Twin Cities on I-94. It’s right on the boarder of the ND flat lands and MN lakes country. I tell people here we moved for the warmer weather, which was the primary reason for the move, because I always get an “are you for...

Roof rack storage ideas...let's see them!

I use Plano sportsman tubs modified with weatherstripping to seal them. Two 108 quarts fit right now as my full size spare has to reside on the roof until I build a swing out for it. They hold 2 tents, 5 sleeping bags, 5 sleeping pads and 5 Alite style camp chairs. I just use ratchet straps to...

    From Minnesota to Utah!

From a born and raised Minnesotan recently transplanted to Utah, check out expeditionutah.com for Utah related info. I actually find Utah overwhelming because there is so much to see here.

Overlanding with a GM 6.5 TD

Isn’t the Hummer 6.5 mechanical fuel injection? I thought I read that somewhere.

Best overland vehicle with 7 seats

Yeah, my friends brand new eco-boost f-150 that quit with less than 15k on it was not what I’d consider old though. Your a Ford guy, that’s OK, my experience is different than yours based on my own prejudice.

Best overland vehicle with 7 seats

No idea, I bought the first because it was a killer deal on a ‘76 Bronco (I’d love to have that back now that I could afford to fix it up). The other was given to me because they were sick of fixing it. Neither where anywhere new or one owner. I don’t buy new, I pay cash. We drive nice cars, but...

Best overland vehicle with 7 seats

I felt the same way 10 years ago, now I just find them too big. I disagree on the price of parts. I always found them to be surprisingly high, given the billions of vehicles on the roads that shared the same parts! Funny how that works in reverse for some people. I’ve owned two fords, non-stop...

Best overland vehicle with 7 seats

You guys who wheel a Suburban or especially an Excursion mentioned before must be on different trails than I’m on! I’ve owned a ‘97 Suburban and an ‘01 Yukon XL. The XL had 345k on it when we sold it and I would have driven it anywhere. As you mentioned, phenomenal vehicles, but they’re HUGE...

What was the worst thing you purchased for your rig? Why?

I had to laugh at myself as I installed my hi-lift on my new roof rack! I’ve had it forever, everybody’s “gotta have one”, right? Even if I found a situation to use it, I can’t. I don’t have any place on my rig I can lift with it. I guess if my winch fails I can use the hi-lift, 48” at a time.

Two small cb’s. Which to choose?

I’ve got the cobra. I’ve used it very little, so little I’ve only pushed the PTT to test SWR! I’ve used it to listen in while traveling on the freeway. I find the sound to be harsh from that tiny speaker. It certainly works ok, but if the volume is up and you get a bit of static, ouch! It does...
