Anyone have any opinions on a winch for an LR4? What make and model and type of install? Would rather not buy a new bumper and add a lot more weight to this already tanky rig. Seen some installs behind the oem bumper. Obviously some pros and cons. I end up doing some solo missions and feel a winch may be the best option to get me out of a mess of solo. Thanks ya'll.

I went with an Engo based on some good reviews and a write up on a winch shoot out from FourWheeler. I was able to pick up a 9K lb winch with synthetic line for under $400. It has mostly been used to get other folks out of trouble but has worked every time I needed it. Last winter I got in a bind wheeling above Buena Vista, had to winch backwards down 200' of icy trail. Definitely not a recommended use of a winch but it was better than the alternative.

The death sentence for a winch is sitting unused for extended periods. When I clean my jeep every few months I'll cycle the winch in an out a few times to keep everything moving and happy.

Edit: Remember to choose your capacity using the 1.5 * GVW rule

I’ve got an LR3, but close enough for this discussion. I did a hidden install of a Smittybilt X2O 10k on a harbor freight winch plate. This was definitely the budget route, but it has served me well. Personally I would buy a full coverage winch bumper before I’d pay for a legit hidden winch mount.
