I can't speak about the plastic rails (but I would prefer metal too), but I have a Tuff Stuff Alpha 2 tent, and the instructions say: "Your vehicle MUST have a roof rack or cross bars installed in order to mount this tent. The cross bars MUST have a dynamic weight load of at least 165Lbs and...
Here you go - a beautiful Sunday to try things out ... much better than rolling into camp at 10:30 PM when it is pitch black and raining cats and dogs (and then trying to do this for the first time). With some head scratching it took about 20 mins total, and my guess is that you can bring this...
I do run the Alpha 2 on my Jeep (due to the short bed) and like it. I see how they improved the product (e.g. having additional velcro straps on all sides), and I got a good deal last Black Friday for the tent, the "tent room" and a free awning (which will go on my trailer).
Compared to other...
I had similar thoughts and went with a mid bed rack and a smaller hybrid hard shell tent (folding out to the side). The benefit is that it is still a hard shell, with the typical benefits of fast deployment, etc., and it fits on the short bed of my Jeep as well as having parts of the tent...
I think he means putting them through the lower piece of the bracket. I am looking at the photos on FR's website and it seems that you can throw away everything but the lower horizontal piece that goes under the rack itself. If the holes are too small for the Alpha bolts, just drill the hole a...
When you look at my pictures above you see the Alpha 2 and not the "big" Alpha. The Gladiator has a short bed similar to the Tacoma (and I actually run a Tacoma bed rack), so I chose the smaller one which will be enough room for the two of us.
Oh, I didn't expect to hear that ... Maybe you get what you pay for ... :-(
But to be specific: did the frame bow, or the slats in the middle? I was thinking to use the roof rack for lighter stuff in duffel bags, such as the awning for my RTT, or a bag with the Exped mega mat in it.
Do you...
I see that you took off the roof rack. What are your experiences with it? I like the price of it and was thinking about buying the same.
Is it easy to remove in case one wants to open the panels for an open air feeling?
I have the Tuff Stuff Alpha 2 and the mattress is 53x78, but there are a few inches more available when the hardcover is open. This is the smaller 2-person tent for shorter beds, and they also have the regular Alpha which is wider (for 4 people).
I bought a pair of "the other" traction mats because I think spending $300 for a piece of plastic is just ridiculous (I can buy 5 pairs of mine for the same amount). I have used them 3 times by now and they look like new.
Either way - to mount them I built a holder with steel plates, carriage...
I did the same and received the tent in late January. It is built solidly and in the latest version the two steel cables have locks. They also added more Velcro straps, so that every non-hinge side has two now (in addition to the two steel cables on the long side).
I am looking forward to...
