2015 Tacoma V6 4x4 DCLB with 3" lift, 265 all terrains, and aluminum bumper. I get about 15 mpg on the highway and if it's purely city driving I get roughly 13 mpg. I'm almost certain it's my driving style.
Forest roads that are dry, not super washed out, and has a really nice view. I don't mind a little bit of challenging terrain but I don't have the skills to navigate anything really tricky and with my truck being my daily, I'm not keen on trying to teach myself through trial and error.
I have a Leer 100XR and I don't think I would trust the weight of a RTT on it without reinforcement. It's old though and has spent it's life in the Utah sun, so I'm guessing the additional wear and tear on it doesn't help.
ARE makes an Overland model of their topper and it says that it's...
That's some pretty good advice. I named my "team" something generic mainly because it was a name not taken on Instagram, but it seems boring and pretty uncreative.
Also in the SLC Valley, I'd be interested in a meet up. I've been wanting to do Moab and it would be nice to go with a group of folks that knew what they were doing. I haven't been in Utah long and I'm originally from Michigan so this is a whole new type of offroading for me.
I have the last generation Tacoma and it was plenty capable out of the box once I got rid of the highway tires Toyota sold it with. I only added lights to it for the longest time and that was mainly to make night time driving in a very rural area a little easier and to hopefully avoid a deer...
I did some of the roads off the Alpine Loop this past autumn and loved it. I also took Snake Creek Road out of Wasatch Mountain State Park and drove a bunch of forest roads down into Cascade Springs. Beautiful area with all the autumn colors out.
I've never heard great things about Rough Country and I'd be leery of their reliability off road. They seem to be more geared towards people that want a lift for show vs. those who want a lift for functionality. I'd hate to see someone get a lift and then run into problem on the trail or have a...
I absolutely love my Tacoma, but knowing what I know now and how I use my rig, I think I would go for a 4Runner of the same year (15). Better interior space, I wouldn't need a topper on the back, a more up-to-date engine, and it would probably ride better.
Although if something ever happened...
I think my parents first took me camping when I was one. I grew up with an annual trip way up into Ontario to Pishidgi Lake in the Kopka River chain on the northwest side of Lake Nipigon. There was nothing and the closest city was Thunder Bay some 200 mile away. It was a great experience and I...
Regrettably as I poke around in various places around the Internet, there seems to be many "old timers" that proclaim to have been "doing this longer than I've been alive" that are just as guilty of looking down on newer folks or folks that just don't have the budget to build a super expo rig. I...
Loving the input so far!
The social media thing is a good point. I have an Instagram page for my travels so I can connect with like minded folks, share pictures, and just check out other rigs. I've actually connected with a lot of great people that way, but on the flip side that is where I see...
It seems super easy to use, which I like, and it's more weather resistant than my current Blue Sea one. When I was in Michigan the amount of corrosion I got on the Blue Sea was insane, but it seems to be better now that I'm in Utah and I don't have to wire brush it nearly as much.
Since you're...
I'm not sure how different the '13's are under the hood compared to the '15's but the Pelfreybilt aux fuse panel I bought doesn't fit very well and makes it super hard to take it off to easily hook up additional wiring. I'm in the process of ripping it all out and starting over from square one...
So I have a massive problem of loving to buy various jackets because I like having something for nearly every temperature out there (I guessing living right down the road from Backcountry feeds my addiction). My go to winter coat now is the Marmot Fordham jacket with 700 down. I have to walk a...
This is something I've been thinking about lately and I was curious to get the input of fellow OB members since this feels more like a genuine group of overland enthusiasts instead of the "trendy" folks I'm talking about in this post.
I've noticed overland is becoming more and more mainstream...
Thanks!
The pods work pretty well, they are mounted to brackets that either attach to some of the fender bolts or the hinge to lift up the hood.
I have mine angled off to the side so there's no glare, I mainly use them to shine light into the ditch where deer like to hide out at night...
The weather is finally nice in Utah, so I had a chance to work on the rig yesterday. I got my CBI Moab 2.0 bumper put on and got my retrofitted HID lights on as well. I love the bumper but the instructions provided by CBI are horrendous, but I gave them a call and they were super helpful at...
Lift kit went on today, opted for 3" since I thought that was probably the sweet spot between drivability and functionality. It's a set of Bilstein 5100 coilovers and Light Racing upper control arms in the front with an add-a-leaf and Fox 2.0 shocks in the rear.
