US Rocky Mountain Meetups for Southern Utah folk

Thanks for the Rally point. @Montazuma told me some folks were getting together so it made it easy to find. I'll be traveling up from Las Vegas on Friday evening. I don't think I'll make it to Sand Hollow before sundown. Is there someone who can text me a dropped pin on Google maps when you...

US West St George to Whitmore Canyon

So the wife and I decided we would take a trip up to Utah and maybe take in Toquerville Falls on President's day weekend. I called @Montazuma and asked what they were doing. He mentioned that Toquerville is nice but he was looking at a run down to the Grand Canyon on Sunday. We talked and...

US West Weekend at Ocotillo Wells and Anza Borrego, January 19th-20th (Weather Permitting) - 01/19/2019

Is that the nearest fuel to the rally point? What town is it in? My vehicle is a Grey FJ Cruiser with a black roof.

US West Weekend at Ocotillo Wells and Anza Borrego, January 19th-20th (Weather Permitting) - 01/19/2019

Wife and I will be coming from Las Vegas, leaving tonight and finding someplace close to Ocotillo Wells way to stay tonight. Based on what I have read earlier I assume the local rally point is the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area around 09:00. Is that correct or is there another...

US West Weekend at Ocotillo Wells and Anza Borrego, January 19th-20th (Weather Permitting) - 01/19/2019

The wife and I will likely be driving from Las Vegas to LA next week to pick up some gear. Our timing might just coincide with this trip. I didn't see the event in the rally point. Do you have one and I missed it?

    Owning an Icon FJ44

That's an amazing looking system. The light military systems since the 80's have used front and rear independent suspension. The new JLTV has 20" (51cm) of wheel travel. No, I don't know how it does on rack crawling :)

    Essential gear overlanding adventure

A little specific on the brands and such. I prefer a long handled shovel for getting under the tires but to each his own. Something I don't much see on essential lists are good navigation tools and a set of common smarts. I don't know I would consider a winch and bumper to be as essential as a...

Yeah. Looks a little barren. Super glad you were able to rescue our lost comrade and give it a home.

Great! Now I know who to ask if I need one :)

Looking for GMRS vehicle antenna recommendations

Thank all of you for the reviews. The form factor of the 275 is exactly what I'd like since we can mount the radio out of sight and not have it take up console real estate. It all comes down to power and that sounds like it's not much an issue. Cheers!

Looking for GMRS vehicle antenna recommendations

This is mainly for group comms. I'd pair this with a Garmin In-Reach to use for emergencies. Question: Does the Browning BR2445 receive wx channels as well? Looks like it is tuned for different frequencies.

I do not, nor do I know anyone who has one. Good luck finding one.

Looking for GMRS vehicle antenna recommendations

So I'm a bit stuck in a "More Power!" mindset and would like some opinions. I am considering the following 3 Midland radios: MXT 115 - 15 watts, has weather MXT 275 - 15 watts, has weather, all controls on Microphone so head unit can be remote mounted MXT 400 - 40 Watts, No weather rx In my...

Looking for GMRS vehicle antenna recommendations

Thanks. Exactly what I'm looking for. That mount is genius. It's hard to look for something you didn't even know existed :)

Looking for GMRS vehicle antenna recommendations

You can buy the MXT400 as a kit with a 27" antenna. My problem is the parking garage for the office. My vehicle barely clears it right now. Adding a 27" antenna isn't going to be good juju. I was hoping to find a phantom antenna that would work with that radio. Any chance of that?

Looking for GMRS vehicle antenna recommendations

Just got my GMRS license and about to pull the trigger on a midland MXT400. I see they have a combo with an antenna but at 27" tall I'll need to fender mount for certain. I have an FJ Cruiser and work in a parking garage and I don't want to hassle with the antenna. Ideally I'd like to find a...

    Overland communications: My current solution

Thanks Kent. I have tried to follow this a bit from a prior thread. Candidly I'm trying to figure out how to get reliable comms without needing to study and take a test. Both the wife and I would need to do it to operate. BTW, does a HAM license cover FRS/GMRS frequencies? Get a HAM license...

    Overland communications: My current solution

Interesting on the headset being such limited range. I knew in the group they acted as repeaters but thought the individual range was much greater. I must have just been lucky to consistently pick up my buddy when we were leaving our houses to meet since they were about 1 mile apart as the crow...

    Overland communications: My current solution

Doesn't work on cell at all. I honestly don't know the radio channel/frequencies it works on but it has a digital pairing capability. The motorcycle system I am speaking of: https://www.twowayradiotalk.com/cardo-scala-rider-packtalk-review/ A real road test of that system...
