Noticed the hatch open height really bothered me, especially in the driveway, which has a bit of angle to it. After doing some research, it turns out Ford installed different open length struts based on RWD (high) vs 4X4 (low), and you can just swap to get the hatch open height you want. I went...
That's a LOT of rear squat. And it also looks like the hitch is too high on the ML, which helps the trailer push down the ML even more. I would consider relocating the spare (maybe throw it in the back of the trailer) when towing...
FYI you can (and should) start your own thread to detail your build by clicking the "Post Thread" button at the top of the Full Sized Rigs forum. I'd like to keep this thread dedicated to my rig, thanks.
Made with what was easily on hand. Not terribly worried about rust up here in the high desert of AZ. The total cost for the rack was under $70. Lower profile was not completely the goal as the awning has to clear the doors and curve of the roof.
Re-routed the vent tubes for the differentials and transfer case to the engine bay and behind the taillight, respectively. Factory vents mount to the frame which is pretty low IMHO. The loop is for extra protection from water, kinda like a reverse p-trap on a sink. Also replaced the front bump...
Did a test run of the awning at the local watering hole. It unpacks/repacks pretty easily and fits the size of the truck quite well (it's an 8'x8' awning for reference). Best of all, the wifey approves!
Installed a proper roof rack (the OEM one literally rubs the roof) using superstrut, as well as adding an awning. Cribbing on mb_01sc's notes from the ford-trucks.com forum.
I purchased everything from my local Home Depot and was able to put it all together in an hour or so for about $75 in...
Did about a 42-mile loop of dirt roads this past weekend, in an area just west of home called Camp Wood. Elevation ranges from 4500ft to 5900ft, so a good amount of climbing and descending. Mostly forest roads with a little bit of singletrack. The Excursion did fantastic, I'm really impressed...
Our second kid arrived in April, and we got tired of dealing with the small back seat + 2 car seats in my 2018 GMC Canyon. So the search was on for a larger exploration/road trip vehicle. Then she said the magic words every Ford and large SUV enthusiast wants to hear, "What's the largest SUV we...
Did more exploring this weekend around the Camp Wood area. Lots of water crossings north of the camp itself, we'll be back to explore more around Bald Mountain itself. Cribbed some notes from this thread: Sunday 10/27/19 - Prescott/Hyde Mountain Dual "Overland" Loop. Ended up taking a side trail...
Huh, looking back on this thread, I never posted about the new tires, installed ~9 months ago. Stepped up to the Falken Wildpeak AT3W's in 265/70R17 as you can see by the pictures in my last post. To prepare, I cut the fender waffles using f8l's guide. and installed the Rough Country 90005...
Since my last update (over a year ago, dang), haven't done anything to the truck, but the family and I relocated to Chino Valley, AZ. We're up at elevation near Prescott with a TON more to explore, which we've been doing a lot of since getting here a few months ago:
New favorite road sign
Did...
ok, so the crazy trails are crazy. shocking. we did easy and moderate trails based on the vehicles that showed up. my canyon is at stock height, for example. i really dont know what you're trying to prove on my thread.
Ehhh I felt like every trail we tried had enough clearance for the rigs. Some belly scraping but the canyon isn't exactly a short jeep wheelbase vehicle. Full video of the day:
