Offroad from Los Angeles to Las Vegas

It depends on how much time you have to spend off road. I have done, over time most of it, just not in one trip. Where would you be leaving LA from? East from the Inland Empire area or north through Palmdale or Mojave? To make a really fun trip, I would leave out of Mojave through the California...

In Reach and SPOT - CAUTION

I was in Puerto Rico for disaster recovery from Hurricane Maria, the sky was clear at times and no obstructions. Using different satellite phones by various manufacturers, all were unreliable, hard time connecting, when they did connect communication was poor at best. All of these were Iridium...

    Mojave Road

I have driven the Mojave Trail many times and work in the area frequently. As stated, it can get cold this time of year (especially at night).Dennis C’s book is great. Things to keep in mind are the pass to Landfair Valley from Fort Paiute (washouts), Soda Lake (flooded), and the water crossing...

In Reach and SPOT - CAUTION

I carry both Inreach and PLB. The Inreach works okay sending messages (slowly at time) here in the west. But, it uses the Iridium satellite system which can have issues. My ACR plb has a test mode to verify gps communication, this does drain the battery if done often, so I only do this test when...

    Central Valley Meet-Up Fresno Ca 12/16/18 - 12/16/2018

Please bear with me. Kent Reynolds set up the last Rally Point for us. I'll get it figured out eventually. I set the maximum at 50 vehicles and it was sent out to a large radius. So hopefully it gets out to those of interest. This will be another informal meet. We can discuss setting up a...

tent storage, fold and roll or stuff?

Mostly Coleman, my 2 boys seemed to find a way to damage my tents (even went to use one and pulled a tent I had never seen before from the bag). So I didn’t go with more expensive ones. They are both grown now so they can buy their own. Now I use the tent cot, my wife only camps when we use the...

    West Africa

Nice to see Africa added. I lived in Liberia and road motorcycles while there. I enjoyed every minute I was there. I had a Honda XL250, and of all things, a Hodaka 100. Great times. I was there at the perfect time for exactly a year. 6 months in Mano River and 6 months just outside Monrovia.

How do you clean engine bay?

I've been using Simple Green since it first came out (yes, I'm that old). Never had an issue and my engine compartments are spotless. The key is if you get new, keep it clean. If it's filthy, use some elbow grease, clean it and then keep it clean. Again, SG has always worked for me. Follow what...

Dual Band Mobile Ham Radio Recommendations

I am partial to my Yaesu Ft-8900 quad band, but in the jeep I have an older Icom. Can't remember the model. It receives 70cm and transmits and receives on 2 meters. Weird, I know. What makes it special it can cross band repeat. On my pickup I have an nmo right in center of crew cab. On the jeep...

tent storage, fold and roll or stuff?

Never fails, like the old saying: 10 lbs of crap in a 5 lb bag. All the tents I have had in last 20 years are a bear to get back in the bag after first use. Except my tent cot, which doesn't count.
