No I left the stock bolted to roof and just used the thule for crossbars using the bolt n washer trick.

I did the same thing but with 1 inch thule crossbars.

Been running 1.5 inch spacer/adapters for 75K miles with no issues. Was the only way I could get a common lug pattern rather than the oddball the truck came with. I actually just put some 1 inch on the Trans Am since I could not find the offset I wanted.

Doubt you gain much with the change from 20 to 18s. Right now you already have the 20s, so unless you think you can sell them for more than the 18s I would seriously consider keeping them. Plus it seems 20 is a more common size than 18 if you need a spare at some point 500 miles form home...
