The Midland MXT500 is just a tad smaller than the Btech 50x1.
The Midland radios also include NOAA weather channels.
However, for the price of the MXT500 I would look at the Wouxon KG-1000g, it's the most capable GMRS mobile on the market at the moment.
Hello Paul (@Elementairtv ) , welcome from Oklahoma though I spent much of my childhood in SE NM and W TX. Check out the Enchanted Rockies Trail that starts in southern NM and goes up through CO. Enchanted Rockies Trail - Lifestyle Overland

@Laud may be of more help with this.
I know he has a route that circumvents the Texas state line and possibly an E/W BDR, I would be surprised if he doesn't have a N/S BDR as well.
There is also the T.E.A.T (Texas Epic Adventure Trail) that goes from Big Bend down towards San Antonio and then...
I have run Ram Xgrip for my phone and while it was ok I didn't like the two-handed operation. I used the same mount to try and hold the control head for my HF ham radio and it would rotate, which was undesirable.
For my phone and 10" tablet I now run Schoch Magnetic flush mounts on homemade...
We will likely have a generator for daytime operations, batteries at night. There are RV sites in the campground with power hookups though we will be in tent camping sites.
The plan currently is to have 3 HF radios set up and operating on 10m, 15m, 20m, and 40m. There are a couple of options...
Here is a SMS/Email via APRS write up I did that I included a post about WXbot if you are interested.
OB Approved - SMS Text and Email via APRS | OVERLAND BOUND COMMUNITY
NWS Now app for forecast and RadarScope for radar.
If cell service is not available, I attempt to use WXBot on APRS.
With a HF ham radio you can also do Weather Fax to get charts and satellite images.

I also run the Midland MXT275 however if you like the Wouxon handhelds they also have a GMRS mobile radio and it's probably the most capable GMRS mobile on the market right now.
@Bob Berryhill get whatever antenna you will want for your mobile radio, ghost antenna, 3db, 6db, whatever. Get coax with a pl259 connector to fit a mobile radio. You can then get an adapter and pigtail to connect the coax to the handheld.
@Bob Berryhill GMRS and FRS now share all channels except repeater inputs so a new FRS radio should be pretty compatible even when using a higher power "GMRS" frequency.
Channels 8-15 are still 0.5 watts for FRS and GMRS so only handhelds will be used there and probably wouldn't be the best...

That spare tire mount isn't too bad, it's up high enough for part/most of the antenna to clear the roof, it's above the spare tire (steel belts) and other metal. You may need to remove some of the coating on the underside of where you mount the antenna to that it makes good connection with the...
