US Rocky Mountain Family-friendly activities in Colorado (between Denver and Durango)

Denver: Six Flags, Water park, and the Denver Zoo are my top three places to go. Tubing down the Arkansas river through Canyon City is fun… but usually the water is low this time of year… I would put in at Centennial Park on the west side of town (just off of HWY 50) and float down to HWY 115...

    Newbie comms questions (HAM/GMRS/APRS)

@walkabout_ca if you get a whining sound in your tranciever’s audio, you might look into either rerouting your coax away from the auxiliary battery power cables, or add ferrite beads to the coax, or both. If no hum or high pitched noise is present (both RX and TX) disregard this comment.

Sadly I have nothing to offer… what freeze dryer do you have?

    Spokane /CDA meetup

@Mountaintrails71 as advised in your other thread, make a Rally Point. It will get more exposure there than scattered all over the forums.

    Spokane / CDA meeting

As @Kent R said, put it up on a rally point. There was talk Sunday on the Inland Northwest Conference call about getting a couple mid season camps and trail runs in. @Sandpoint Steve is your closest member representative, he has a lot of good information on helping you put together some kind of...

    FNG

I wouldn’t downgrade to a 1500 from a 2500… it’s very easy to overbuild an overland rig and max out your hauling capacity. We generally recommend using what you have.

I set up a reminder… I’ll be there… glad to see you starting this back up Steve, I’ve missed the past couple of months.

    Newbie comms questions (HAM/GMRS/APRS)

APRS has full weather coverage… and then there is the weather bands that you can program into your radio to get voice alerts as well…

How many texts can you send before your InReach starts charging you extra money?

always go NMO if you can, it makes swapping antennas easier or easier to store when not in use. HRO is a great resource for online radio shopping, don’t forget DX Engineering and Gigaparts… shop all three for their sales…

    Lug Extenders for Breaker

Ground to the frame, not the battery. Add your positive accessory leads to the bolt I have circled in the picture below.

    Newbie comms questions (HAM/GMRS/APRS)

You are not wrong, although most of the APRS features in the Yasue FT400XDR are accessible from the head unit. However I’m unsure if you can send SMS via APRS to a phone with the 400XDR. I know you can send messages back and forth between APRS users with or without the need of an igate...

    Newbie comms questions (HAM/GMRS/APRS)

I’m a huge fan of the Rugged brand accessory mounts. The A pillar would be a more ideal mounting location over the bumper, although adding a mount to the under side of your RTT would probably get you the best performance (if possible). I’m not much of a help on antenna selection because I don’t...

    Lug Extenders for Breaker

It took me a week for drain my battery down completely with the radio accidentally left on. If you make sure to turn it off, there is no draw.

    Newbie comms questions (HAM/GMRS/APRS)

I have spent most of this summer experimenting with using just an HT for 2m/70cm communication… places I could hit the repeaters easily with 25 watts I can hear, but they can’t hear me… Last night I tried using my 8 watt HT to hit a repeater 15 miles away with an external J-Pole antenna...

    PNW Overland Expo Question

One thing that would help… I noticed a lot of people were trying to buy tickets the last two weeks before the Expo, but online sales had stopped… the website said “Sold Out”… they may need to market it better so that people know tickets are still available at the gate, just not at the presale...

    Lug Extenders for Breaker

Communication gear always runs fused straight to the battery… the battery acts as an RF Filter. And yes LED lights are RF Generators.
