So for those still interested in going with me on the TAT this summer...
I am a planner. I am trying to plan this trip for myself, and for those who would like to do the TAT but planning isn't necessarily their thing (or they'd rather someone else do the planning - and that's ok with me).
The...
Right now I'm a little-bit waiting to see what the NWOR (Northwest Overland Rally) dates are going to be this year. A friend of mine asked if I'd help him lead a group on the WABDR right after the NWOR. I don't know yet if they're planning on June or the end of August/September for the event...
That's why I started this thread six months out. I'm a believer in "If you don't plan it, it won't happen". Time's flying, I'm not getting any younger, 2020 sucked, and I've been wanting to do the TAT for years. I've decided 2021 is the year for this trip (why not?). So before my summer gets...
Good question.
1. That's how it was kinda designed, and I always figured I go that direction.
2. (and probably the main reason) I live in WA. I'd rather "sprint" out to the starting point (straight highway as much as possible from WA to WV), do the TAT route (figure about a month-long...
In looking at the map, there's enough there for two trips with minimal overlap (and those parts that overlap look like they'd be worth a second trip).
I just need a serious overlanding trip in 2021. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
My Willys has the pill removed from the transfer case so I have 2WD low as an option with the twin stick Spicer 18. I love it.
Truth be told, I'd love to do the TAT with the Willys and trailer (that was always my dream - doing the TAT with the Willys and trailer). And it hasn't been ruled...
I need to look at the TAT map and compare it to a CO map. If I do the CO piece ("Shadow of the Rockies"), then I won't be going through UT or Moab. And I don't know if doing the CO piece means I'll miss Ouray (my CO geography is poor). Part of length-of-stops will depend on if I'm with a...
This is what I'll be getting for my transfer case (eventually even if I don't take the TJ on this one):

I have a Detroit locker in my TJ's rear Dana 44 axle, and an Aussie in the front. I need something like this for tight...
That would be great. Keep checking on this thread for updates. A trip like this you need to start planning early.
I would love to go through Colorado on this trip (I spent a couple years stationed at Ft Carson CO back in the early 80's). I know some of the trails in CO are one-way and they...
My GPS thingy I'm using on my phone is GAIA. I'm fairly new to using GPS. But I can download a file and upload it into GAIA on my computer and it will show up on GAIA on my phone. It was really easy to follow (GPS tracks) when I did the Pacific Crest Overland Route (PCOR). So the good folks...
Here's the deal. I want to do the TAT in 2021; I have been wanting to for years & I'm not getting any younger (I'm 60 years young). I'm no longer working full time, and it is getting to the point "If not now... when?". I live in WA state.

You lose power when converting from 12 volts DC to 120 volts AC. See if your CPAP machine can run off of straight 12 volts.
A second isolated battery would be best. If not an option, buy one of those hand-held jump starters for just in case (they're not expensive).
I have a little trailer I pull behind my Jeep TJ (pictured) with a double sized tent-cot from Cabela's bolted to the lid (tent-cot not opened up in the picture) which functions as a RTT. Works fine, but you can't really sit up in it; it is really only good for sleeping in.
However, my...
(to continue from my previous post above)... A couple years ago my wife and I took the ferry from Port Angeles, WA to Victoria, BC to celebrate our 20th anniversary (we went to Victoria on our honeymoon in 1998). On the return trip to Port Angeles, we got in line at the ferry terminal in...
When overlanding I carry both. I have too many vehicles to have a box in all of them though. But all my vehicles (including my wife's Subaru and my daughter's Beetle) have jumper cables.
I haven't decided yet if I'm going to swap out the mil-surplus ratchet strap on the back of my Willys for an NRS strap. It doesn't get near as dirty as something mounted on the side of a vehicle (or trailer).
I've got two 2.5 gallon Jerry cans attached to the side of my trailer. I bought some military surplus ratchet straps to help hold the cans in their carriers. They looked cool, and they worked great! Top picture.
Until I took the trailer on an adventure (running the WABDR). It was muddy...
