Miscellaneous:
Dogs. I like dogs. I like dogs better than I like some people. I have dogs at home (too bad they’re not overlanding dogs). If you bring one (or more!), you need to keep them under control (it would be extremely sad if one got loose and we couldn’t find it). I know bears...
What Should I NOT Bring & Expectations:
No smoking marijuana. I don't care if it is legal in many states. Please don't bring it or buy it to smoke it (there are other options – tinctures, edibles, gummies, etc. – go for it).
No illicit drugs (I shouldn't have to say it... but I will... I guess...
What To Bring & Expectations:
Bring a sense of adventure, and an understanding that things won't always go as planned or as you would like. There is no way I can guarantee how far we will travel every day, or when we will arrive at a certain destination, where we will stop every night, or...
Rules, requirements, & recommendations… I like to put them out up front so there’s no questions about what’s expected of folks; what’s ok & what’s not ok, etc. People don’t like surprises at the last minute – and I don’t want anyone to have hurt feelings before we even get started on day one...
We are going to start the TAT in Ripley, WV. We will continue west until we connect to the "Shadow of the Rockies" in CO, and will follow it north. We will reconnect to the TAT in WY. From there we will continue west on the TAT into ID where we will branch off to the Pacific Ocean Spur, and...
Here's a question for all you out there:
What kind of radio communications are you using on the trail? I've used CB radios for years/decades (have them in three of my current 4x4 vehicles), but lately GMRS seems to be becoming the norm. I have a portable radio that covers GMRS frequencies in...
Yeah; that's why I earlier mentioned figuring 100 - 150 miles/day. Seems like the more vehicles you have, the longer it takes at gas stops, getting everyone through obstacles, etc. Once we get a rhythm going we'll have a better idea of miles per day.
Yeah; decisions... decisions. Neither one is a bad choice.
However, I think we're going to do the Shadow of the Rockies portion. I've been to Moab (Easter Safari one year). Had a great time. But I want to try and keep the group together, and (in my opinion) if you don't have someone there...
Possibly. Part of this trip is to enjoy the ride. I don't want to rush through it, but I also don't plan on being a slowpoke. So I think it will be hard to tell before we start where we will be at a certain future date - I wish I could. Once we've been traveling for a few days and get a...
CatButt had some good pointers above. Tools are good. Bring what you think you need but don't bring every tool known to man. Tools are another area you can go expensive on (Snap-On and such), or just get a good set at Harbor Freight and be done with it. I will have tools. But if there's a...
A lot of folks read the Overlanding magazines, are on more than one Overlanding Forum, and see all the expensive vehicles and gear and might think "I've got to have all that to go overlanding". No you don't. I've listed what I consider the minimum vehicle requirements to do the TAT (or about...
I have my HAM license too (KI7TSP). I have a CB and a little UV8R radio mounted on my Jeep's dash with an external antenna. It'll get all the GMRS frequencies (have my GMRS license too). Both will work. I'm not trying to scare folks off by making them think they need a lot of high-dollar...
Awesome! I hope you come on board. My background is critical care nursing and trauma nursing (armyRN - get it?)
Vehicle prep. I haven't posted vehicle requirements yet, but they include:
4WD or AWD vehicle with decent ground clearance.
At least All Terrain tires in good repair with plenty...
Sure. Let's see if we can work something out. Colorado is one of the states I'm really looking forward to visiting on this trip.
I'll decide on a WV departure date sometime in January and will post it so others can plan if they want to join me. I'm a lil' bit leaning towards the 12 June WV...
Yup. Make it happen. Would definitely be an adventure of a lifetime.
Block off those days, prep your vehicle, get your gear, and lets do this.
How can we help you?
I'll order mine sometime after the first of the year. It'll come to a little over $100 once I'm done. I'll be getting the TAT bundle, plus the Rockies piece, and the Pacific Ocean Spur.
But after using GPS stuff loaded onto my phone using the GAIA platform a few times this year to mark our...
Which might be doable if I were going by myself heading out from WA to the start of the TAT in WV. If there's a group going (even just one other), we'd need to be making time on the highway (and even then, my four-cylinder TJ pulling the trailer won't win any races on the highway). Unless we...
I plan on us taking the Colorado portion of the TAT (runs north through all of CO), which ends at the southern WY border. And then WY to ID to OR.
If for some reason CO portion of "Shadow of the Rockies" isn't an option, we would continue on to Utah and up into ID, then to OR.
I'm leaning...
