    HAM/GMRS

It isn't advertised as such, but when you look at the specs, it covers the GMRS frequencies. Just like my UV5R and UV8R handhelds.

    HAM/GMRS

I've got both my HAM license (KI7TSP) and my GMRS license. This 25W BaoFeng radio is a dual-band HAM radio that also transmits and receives GMRS. They also have a 50W dual-band radio (I believe 50W is the max you can go on a GMRS radio). I like the small size, and mostly it was for convoy...

    OB1 app "Bug" reports ONLY

It fixed my issue on my android phone. Thanks!

    OB1 app "Bug" reports ONLY

Ok... this just started on my android phone. When I click on the Overland Bound One app, it pulls up (Jeep in the dark blue background), the little wheel starts spinning for a second or two, then it stops (Overland Bound One screen disappears), and I get the message "Overland Bound One has...

    Overlanding and kayaking

I have, but sadly didn't use it near as much as I would have liked to.

    Beginner questions!!

Here's a very long build thread on my little HF-based trailer. It has served me well. Mini Harbor Freight (type) Trailer Ultimate Build-Up Thread | Jeep Enthusiast Forums (jeepforum.com)

US Northwest Idaho BDR (and then some!)

You're welcome. The trailer is based off a 4' Harbor Freight trailer frame. The tongue has been extended, factory slipper springs replaced with real leaf springs with a shackle in the rear, the axle is now a Dexter 3500lb axle with electric brakes, and the tub is just a diamond plate box with...

Like I mentioned, if Canada loosens its Covid restrictions for their upper territories, I'd like to take another run at running the Dempster all the way to Tuk (I've gone as far as Inuvik, but that was before the road was extended to Tuk). If you don't plan it, it won't happen. We'll see how...

Thanks! Would love to have you. I try to put out as much info and instructions ("rules" if you wish) ahead of time as possible so there are no surprises for anyone on day one or thereafter. I went back and reread what I had written. I don't think there's really anything in there that any...

    Idaho BDR 50" Bridge

We went through it, no issues. There was no 50 inch restriction.

Good luck! Be sure and tell us how your trip went (with pictures).

Steve and I debated back and forth over which was our favorite trail - the IDBDR or the Pacific Ocean Spur ("POS") off the TAT. I don't think we ever came to a conclusion - they were both awesome! The IDBDR might get more press and be more well-known (since it is a BDR route), but that...

Thanks for the photos! It was a great trip. I'm looking forward to hearing your take on the Spur.

To me, safety in numbers also includes having someone there in case you break down or get really stuck. I've been on solo trips in the middle of nowhere thinking "If something were to happen, I'm kinda screwed. It is a looooong walk out of here, and I don't know what would happen to my vehicle...

You can spend some money on a high-powered GMRS radio. On this IDBDR trip I used a 25 watt BTECH UV-25x2 Dual Band HAM radio (that also transmits and receives GMRS) of course with an external antenna. Sometimes we were on a HAM frequency; other times we were on a GMRS frequency (usually...

As a follow-on from my previous post on page 9.... Four Wheeler Magazine recently closed their application for the 2022 Overland Adventure (I was a participant in their 2019 Overland Adventure East event). Here for your reading pleasure are some of their vehicle requirements (cut and pasted...

US Northwest June 2020 WABDR - Washington Backcountry Discovery Route

I'd be willing to do the WABDR again. We just finished the Idaho BDR. It is broken down into eight sections. Here it is broken down by section according to their paper map: 1 - 174 miles 2 - 200 miles 3 - 205 miles 4 - 125 miles 5 - 190 miles 6 - 127 miles 7 - 106 miles 8 - 110 miles (and...

To anyone thinking about setting up or organizing a trip like this, these (not-so-random thoughts) might be helpful.... 1. What I usually do, is I think about a trip I'd like to take, and then decide if I want to go solo (has its own pros and cons) or organize it as a trip/Rally Point on OB...

Yeah; this was basically one long Overlanding Convoy Operation. Good points! Fortunately we had a system in place for convoy communications that seemed to work very well. My fear on these kinda trips is that someone will take a wrong turn or get separated from the group. While we (ok... me...

A couple other afterthoughts.... 1. I think most of us used GAIA on the trip. It worked fine. But if you can download maps onto whatever you're using on the trail while you have internet connection, then you can use them when offline on the trip. It'll just make it easier to follow your GPS...
