I've taken my 17" Blackstone griddle camping. It works great depending on what you plan on cooking and you don't need to bring a pan. Just make sure you have something else to boil water. Nice they thought of that side-burner on the first stove.
Essentially yes. A dispersed campsite, at least in CA, is first come first serve. If you see a spot but keep exploring, it could potentially be taken by anyone else. usually not a problem if you're far enough away from others but it could happen. That said, almost any spot in BLM/NF land can be...
Welcome Glen. Sounds like you've got the right attitude to get out there and just do it. Many folks have already suggested some great ideas. Taking baby steps is key. I even just go to a local campground to try new gear and stuff. It's close, easy, and if something doesn't quite work out, I'm...
I might have some nature guide books with me and I'll see if I can find out about what I'm looking at while I'm looking at it.

If I find something interesting out in the wilds, I'll drop a pin on Gaia with a...

I use Gaia almost exclusively. I like to keep my process simple. It has its bugs, but I definitely don't have the issues mentioned...
Bear Creek CG is a pretty good campground. I've hardly seen anyone there, they have pit toilets, and the creek runs year round. Probably going there this weekend.
We might have to cancel. Looks like they've closed that whole area because of the rains, and looking at the forecast I don't see any real period of no rain this week.

And why I never camp around there, and still don't know the draw of that place. Last summer I came across a fatal SxS crash right there on the north side. Rescue chopper was just getting there, but you could tell the guy was already dead.
On a better note, I would continue west on Bartlett...
