    '14 JKU Overhaul

yes, a gear change will no doubt help in the future, just don't go too tall. My son swapped to 5.13 gears, and his mpg dropped to 13-14. We swapped in a 5.7 last July, and mileage increased to almost 15 mpg with 37" tires. I have a 2014 Rubicon with 4.10 gears stock, have run 35's since day...

    Overland Camping Trailers w/ Bathroom?????

Forgot to mention that when I bought a roof top tent for our new Smitybuilt, I bought an XL tent, and the porta-potti sits off the edge of the queen mattress to one side. Climbing down a ladder in the middle of the night was not going to end well for my wife, so we have an indoor bathroom when...

    How many fabricators out there?

Yup, my wife enjoys the dual sport, harley, jeeps, camping, shooting, anything we can do together. When I raced national off road events around the country, she even managed the pit crew, and even stayed up all night in the pits when I would race a 24 hour event so she was ready when i had to...

    How many fabricators out there?

I expect there are a lot of fabricators on this site, in all skill levels. I think the biggest variable would be accessible tool and someone who taught them. I have a well equipped shop, so fabricate everything. First motor swap when i was 20 or so in 1981, v8 swapped into a 1942 flat fender...

    Overland Camping Trailers w/ Bathroom?????

I did just that 3 year ago. To do it right takes a lot of work, skill and planning. Here is a picture mine from the rear. Full kitchen, insulated walls/ceiling/floor, 12 volt/110 ac wired, fold down bed, Fridge, porta potti, etc. The only issue is low ground clearence. We haul our...

    Animal Encounters

You can't believe how fast a black bear can cover ground, and even bigger grizzlies cover ground fast. If you need a gun and it's not on your person, you probably won't have time to get to it. A Chest rig is the best carry option when in bear country, but it's useless unless you practice...

    Animal Encounters

In the last three years, we have come across Black Bear, Moose, Elk, Coyote, cougar, buffalo and less dangerous animals like deer, rabbit, etc, many strolling through camp. I'm always armed with either a 1911 or a 44 mag in a chest rig, as well as an AR and Mossberg tactical with slugs in the...

    Smittybilt Overland Trailer

I never saw my trailer when delivered. I didn't have the time to assemble, so I just paid 4 wheel parts to assemble. charged me 4 hours, but took over 11 hours. Now I see why it took so long to assemble. Looks like about 2 hours just to unpack the parts...

NF 250 - Idaho to Montana

Yes, that is a beautiful area. I spend a ton of time playing and exploring between highway 12 and highway 90. I found the GPS locations of all the current and past fire towers, so spend time traveling around finding ruins.

    Living "off grid"....

Good advice. Test purity and a 4 hour drawdown test. My well only drops 100 feet after 4 hours, and still produces 20 gallons per minute. 4 hour drawdown test will help determine how well your well will perform in a drought as well.

    Jeeping it! Food storage question

I have strobe lights around my new smittybilt trailer. The remote has 3 settings, two strobe and normal on, so the lights also provide normal lighting. I have no desire to confront a bear at night, as it's a rather unnerving experience, even when you are prepared to confront the threat. The...

    Jeeping it! Food storage question

First, if you are in grizzly country, some forest service campgrounds won't allow tents, so plan on having to find dispersion camping spots in high bear concentration areas. Second, NEVER sleep in the cloths you wear while cooking. You will get food on those cloths, so leave them outside of...

    Living "off grid"....

We are not off the grid, but our property is setup to go full off the grid for at least a year without any outside support. No internet access on my property, and only Verizon works, but only on certain spots on the property, so we are a little ways away from any city. I have 4 generators...

    Beedlocks for Overlanding?

It's unlikely you need bead lockers. Two weeks ago, on another rock crawling adventure, we got into some pretty gnarly rocks, and I tore the sidewall down to the chord on TWO 35 inch BF Goodrich KM2 tires, and my son tore the sidewall on one 35 inch tire of a different brand. No beads broken...

    Rear bumper winch

Synthetic. Had to pull a broken rig 8 miles through deep snow, over 100 winch pulls. Would not have been possible with a steel line, too heavy. 3 of those pulls were backwards with the broken rig attached to my jeep with a strap. 14 hours of hard work...

    Rear bumper winch

99% won't use a rear winch enough to warrant the cost, and there is a simple solution for winching yourself out backwards. Run the winch rope under the front and rear axles from the front winch mount, put a D-ring on your hitch chain eye, run the winch rope through the D-ring to keep it...

    Significant Other

...yup, all that and a porta-potty. I purchased an extra large RTT so we had room for a queen mattress as well as the porta-potty off to the side. No getting out of the tent in the middle of the night or early morning. Making our ladies happy on adventures is key to a successful experience...
