There are a few DIY plans out there. I am actually planning on building the camper bed for my '62 Willys truck build doing the same thing. I'd be interested to hear of anyone has experience with it.
Great week for picking parts up. Fuel pump that was on back order for two months showed up, got my box of parts for the steering box rebuild, and I scored a nice set of manifolds on a Facebook group. Can't wait to put the steering box and carb on the work bench and get to work!
I just became a member, I was wondering what I needed to do to put my badge number in my signature/profile? Is there something special in need to do or just type it in? Also, are there any sections of the forum that are only accessible to members, such as the members map?
Yes I do, have a few pictures in the build thread as well. Right now it's on its way to the frame to get completely rebuilt. Hoping to eat the cab off and motor pulled before it is too cold. Want to try and work on the motor and small stuff in the garage this winter.
While the Willys Truck is my starting point, one of these days I'm going to have to think about a family capable rig. My son is 9 months old now, and eventually one day we will be a family of four God willing. So, those of you with (young) kids, what is a good rig for the family to explore in?
Well, after hanging out here for a while; I decided to become a member. Ordered my emblems today even though it will be a good while before they make it on the Willys. The discussions and info here have been awesome, can't wait for it to continue!
I tend to go for beef sticks from a local smoke house. And sadly, the stupid hostess pies you get at the gas station...serious guilty pleasure right there. The wife definitely gets on my case when I get more than one!
My first three planned mods (aside from restoration work) are:
1. Tires & Wheels - currently on the cheapest 235-75R15's someone could find.
2. Spring/Shocks - I need to smooth up the ride from old stock springs.
3. Raised Breathers - may put a snorkel on this list but haven't decided.
I agree, I'd try to find something in that $4K range to give you some mobility for learning and upgrading. One blog you may want to check out is East Coast Overland Adventures. He has a Facebook site and is very budget minded. He runs a trimmed down, just past stock XJ and has made some LONG...
I would second that the Tahoe or Suburban might be a little big. Not only width wise, but length of the frame may be an issue. What is your main goal trail wise aside from daily driver duties?
I am working on restoring a '62 Willys Truck. No where close to what you are aiming for but it meets...
I'm gonna have to go with my oldies. I'd jump to a Willys Wagon with a diesel conversion, probably put 44's and disc brakes under it for parts and reliability. Put a tear drop with an RTT on the top of it and I'd be set for the family to go on an adventure with me.
Made some progress this afternoon. Drivers side fender is off, cab mount bolts were ground off and the steering box is off for a rebuild. I pulled the rest of the wiring harness as well as the jack wagon who worked on it before routed wires around both sides of the parking brake cable. There...
So I was wondering what everybody regarded as the most "classic" rig to take overland. If you look back, the FJ's, Land Rover's, Willys Jeeps/Wagons...what do you guys think goes down as the one that truly pioneered overlanding? Or, the rig that made the biggest impact in the hobby?
For sale is a lightly used floor liner set from Rugged Ridge. Had them in our 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee for about a year and a half, never used and abused them. These sell for $175 on Amazon, asking $75 plus shipping or can pick up in Central Ohio area.
It may sound stupid, but I've always had really good luck with John Deere batteries. I'm not sure who makes them, and they don't have every group, but never let me down. They've got a good warranty, and if they are made to start a cold diesel on a tractor, they sure as heck should crank over a...
So the Willys truck project has stumped me again. In the essence of keeping the truck more original, traditionally the truck would've ridden on 6.50-16 bias ply tires. I have also thought about more modern 31x10.5r16's. Both are readily available, but which is the better option?
If I go tubed...
The more I've been reading I think I am going to have to split the camper and the truck. The axles, while they are rated for the weight, the tubes and bearings are not made for the weight and off roading.
I think I really should stay with 4.27 or higher for the ratio as well. With 4.88's and...
The eventual plan is to build a camper bed out of a plywood skeleton like the one above. This is all provided I can strengthen the frame and suspension enough to handle it. The camper will have a door on the back, under bed storage and a fold out kitchen. I will have 10 gallons of fuel storage...
Ask and you shall receive. Sadly right now she isn't much. I'm hoping I can find time to get the drivers fender and cab off this weekend. That will get me down to the frame, from there I'll start stripping and repair the frame and axles. I'm going to completely frame off the truck and drive...
