First off, it’s been a long time since I’ve been on and I’m looking forward to actually having an Overland capable vehicle.
I recently bought a 2015 Ford F-150. It is a crew cab, short bed. Has the FX4 package, the 3.5L EcoBoost, Hill Descent Control and the selectable automatic transmission...
Been a while since I've been on. I was doing some digging, why wouldn't a surplus Humvee work as an overland rig? A late 80's AM General with less than 50K on it seems to go for less than $10K. That's a lot lower miles than anything else in the price range. Being military I would imagine it...
I really am surprised nobody has chimed in for Toyota, such as the FJ40 or 45's. I can understand the Willys Jeep/wagon getting over looked completely. While they were marketed heavily in the 4x4 market, it was never for long distance overland travel. I honesty think the FJ40 could give an early...
When looking at used Lan Cruisers, Tacoma's, XTerra's and such; I see a ton of them that are <$5K and in the 120-200K mile range. Obviously, when looking at used the first rule is to pay attention to how well it was cared for previously. But, is there a point in which just general age of...
The thread on the Land Rover was great discussion and got me looking at a ton of great options for a starter rig. I thought it would be a good idea to compile some pros & cons for all kinds of starter rigs. Sort of a reference point for people to get an idea for what might be a good fit and then...
That being said, what about the gas motors in the Disco 1? Those seem to be more available than the TDI's around my neck of the woods.

So, what I'm reading out of this and a discussion on a FB group...
1. Disco I's and III's are more reliable than Disco II's.
2. The 300TDI motor is the better option than the gas V8's
3. Avoid the air suspension.
4. Be prepared for more routine maintenance than normal.
Sound correct?

Sitting around looking at local Disco pricing and this rig is sitting in my subscription list. Makes me want one all the more.

Would I be better off to go with a Discovery I instead of a II? From what I've read they were less probed to trouble, but still a Land Rover. Let's face it, we all wish we could own a Defender, but that's not exactly cost effective.

In looking for possible options under $5K, I have access to a lot of clean Land Rover Discovery II's and Range Rovers. Most of them are garage kept, clean trucks with under 150K miles. City cars, but still 4x4 and ready to be modified for overland use. So, what are the pros and cons of a Land...
So I've been digging Craigslist up all weekend. If I can find a classic like a FJ or Wagoneer it is either priced insanely or has been used in a mud bog for the last three years. However, what I can find are very clean Land River Discovery's and Range Rover's. They all seem to be 150K or less on...
The Cherokee Chief/Super Chief idea isn't bad. Trouble will be finding one in the Ohio area that isn't a rust bucket on wheels. Probably still get more for my money if I went newer. I really want to go to a classic though, just more my speed. It's not just going to be the family OV rig, but a...
The FJ60's and 55's definitely caught my eyes. I have found a few 40's around Ohio in that $5-7K range. But there again, very few and far between and going to be smaller than the others. I've got a beat on a nice CJ6, but if I go that route I'm almost garuanteed to have to have a trailer down...
So, I'm wanting to restart my overland rig build. I'm trying to offload the Willys truck, not because I don't like it, but because I want to share this with my wife and kids. So, I'm idea hunting. I've got a couple must have's, shoot me some ideas to do some digging!
Must haves:
--Seats 4 or...
I thought if people had pictures of classic overland rigs, whether it was one you ran back in the day or currently use, we could share them! I love the pictures of JK's, Xterra's and the like, but what about some classic FJ'a, Land Rovers and more?!
Anybody take a flatbed truck overlanding? Seems like tool and fuel storage would be a lot easier. If you do, post pictures of the rig, love to get a few good ideas.
The motor I would swap for would either be the Cummins 4BT or a Kubota V2203. Both can be adapted to the stock T90 transmission. Both also have about the same horsepower and parts availability.
As I am progressing on the Willys rebuild, the engine continues to concern me. I'm not entirely sure that the block is in sound condition. When I started tear down it was firing on 4&5, which is the number one spot for a cracked block in that motor. So, if I have a bad block, I may do an engine...
