    Solar panel for off-grid camping

I also own this ACO panel. Been using it for about 3 months. My trailer has a solar controller built in so I'm not using the included controller. This panel works well and is far more convenient and easier to store than my old 100 watt hard suitcase. -Curtiss

    Chainsaws

I've carried a Ryobi drill and inflator in my rig for a while. I just (last week) decided to pick up their little 10" chain saw that takes the same battery. I already had the 12 volt charger and 2 batteries so for me even if I run the battery dead on the saw there is no waiting around. I can...

    Ready to embrace propane...finally

I resisted propane until the beginning of this year. My Coleman gear includes a stove, lantern and catalytic heater that all burn Coleman fuel. At the beginning of this year I picked up our new off road teardrop trailer which has a propane stove and tank. So, I retired the Coleman fuel gear...

What do you use to store all your gear?

I have couple of those also. They are great. They are aluminum surplus army medical chests and come in a few different heights. I've been looking at options for storing gear on my roof rack. Needs to be low profile so I was looking at the shorter version of the medical chest. They are a...

Question: How to carry bikes on trailer

I've seen trailers with the option to put a 1 1/4" hitch on each of the four corners. This would allow a 2 small bike carriers to be used on each front side and a larger 2" receiver on the back for a larger carrier for 2 bikes for a total of 4 bikes. This could provide balance for...

    Tinted Windows or Not?

There's also the legal implications. Some states, especially western states have a limit on the darkness of the tint. -Curtiss

Big wheels small tires or small wheels big tires?

Smaller wheels, larger tires. If I were to peg the absolute largest wheel size I would say 18", and that's pushing it. Most I know run 17" wheels which on modern rigs is sometimes as small as you go without doing spacers or other stuff. My dad ran 16" wheels on his truck way back in the day...

    Lighting upgrade...What connectors?

They do make special crimpers for this style of connector however I got by using my regular barrel crimpers followed up a touch of solder. Solder was probably not necessary but I typically do this for extra security. Mine are definitely not coming apart. -Curtiss

Do you take time to leave it better than you found it?

I learned it from my dad and I'm passing those ways onto my son. Any place you go leave it better than you found it. Whether we are hiking, camping or in the truck on a trail if we see trash we grab it. -Curtiss

    Vehicle Electrical Distribution

I really like the spod and that is what I would go with if I were doing it over. However, I ended up rolling my own a couple years back. I used all marine grade electrical hardware and am quite happy with how it turned out. -Curtiss

    Lighting upgrade...What connectors?

I like the Deutsh DT style 2 pin connectors for lighting. I used two different sizes for my wiring. The slightly larger for the 14 AWG and the smaller for the 16-20 AWG. Here's an example link off of Amazon for one of them -Curtiss

Durango to Alta Lakes, CO (through Purgatory)

It was fairly busy. We did camp at the tail end of the dispersed camping area so we were pretty isolated. Many people just go up for the day and don't camp. Lots of fishermen, kayakers, mountain bikers, etc. I had originally planned on camping a little further back by one of the other lakes...

    Winch bumpers

In the case of modern trucks you not only lose highway MPG due to weight but also due to the aerodynamics of the vehicle changing. I would venture to say aerodynamics probably effect things more than weight actually. Some vehicles have winch plates that fit behind the existing bumper or an...

    Frontrunner boxes

I've bought a few surplus military style boxes over the years. Always the best bang for the buck. My most recent purchase was a large aluminum medical chest. This now holds the majority of the gear I like to have in my truck when overlanding but don't necessarily want to carry around all the...

    Lighting up Camp

In the past I've always used an old Coleman fuel lantern as a primary light source. The thing puts out an incredible amount of light and is especially nice when setting up camp at night. When I put together my new rig with the trailer I made the decision to go completely electric. The trailer...

Durango to Alta Lakes, CO (through Purgatory)

I have attached a google maps link for the route we took from Durango CO, to the Purgatory Ski Resort, then over on several back roads to 145 and up to the Alta Lakes dispersed camping area. I adjusted the endpoint on the map to my exact camp site. It sits on a small hill and is a great spot...

    Camp Photos!

A shot of our camp at Alta Lakes, CO. What a muddy mess. It rained a significant amount every day but it was still a beautiful trip. -Curtiss

    Camp Photos!

Quick overnighter to Seven Springs CCC Campground just north of Cave Creek, AZ. Hit the road the next day and followed FR24 up to Bloody Basin Rd. and then over to I17 and up to meet some friends in Camp Verde. Nothing too intense although Bloody Basin Road has degraded a bit since the last...
