I should have been a little clearer in my post rather than making a sweeping statement :-)
I was referring to longer distance trips where the terrain will be varied and let me say I'm not an expert I'm still gearing up for longer trips. Most of my trips are still in the 3,000 to 5,000 mile...
It's huge though when packed, have you looked at Snowpeak folding firepit or Tentipi Helko both pack much smaller than the Biolite. You could probably get the Helko 30 and a cheap solar panel kit for less than the price of the Biolite base camp

Have had a Biolite stove for a year now, the unit is well built and packs within itself. It's not small though so still a reasonable pack size for a single burner, it will take more space than most single burner gas cannister powered stove's. You soon realise just how much fuel is needed we...
Just bought a Helko splitting used it in anger for the first time today made easy work of a weeks worth in just under an hour. The head is made in Germany and the handle in Switzerland from grade A US Hickory

I opted for these 2 as combined they still use less space than a stove. Will use the open fire pit where allowed and the heatpal when not in my tipi.

Looks like you had a blast, was in betws y coed a few times in 2016 I'm also heading up to Scotland quite soon but don't think I will manage a month at the moment if only will probably be just a couple of weeks

Is that a Tentipi in your avatar? I was really close to getting one of those but decided for an Aussie Touring style tent from Southern Cross. How have you found the Tentipi?
Have them all, I like the look. I opted for 2 spotlights either side of a smaller light bar and also have 2 LED lights facing the rear wired to the reverse with a manual over ride.
