When / why did off road tires get to be so beefy?

I should have been a little clearer in my post rather than making a sweeping statement :-) I was referring to longer distance trips where the terrain will be varied and let me say I'm not an expert I'm still gearing up for longer trips. Most of my trips are still in the 3,000 to 5,000 mile...

    Biolite Stoves/Lanterns

It's huge though when packed, have you looked at Snowpeak folding firepit or Tentipi Helko both pack much smaller than the Biolite. You could probably get the Helko 30 and a cheap solar panel kit for less than the price of the Biolite base camp

When / why did off road tires get to be so beefy?

    Biolite Stoves/Lanterns

Have had a Biolite stove for a year now, the unit is well built and packs within itself. It's not small though so still a reasonable pack size for a single burner, it will take more space than most single burner gas cannister powered stove's. You soon realise just how much fuel is needed we...

    Heating for sleeping

I opted for these 2 as combined they still use less space than a stove. Will use the open fire pit where allowed and the heatpal when not in my tipi. Sent from my VIE-L09 using Tapatalk

Is that a Tentipi in your avatar? I was really close to getting one of those but decided for an Aussie Touring style tent from Southern Cross. How have you found the Tentipi?

Going to add 4 spot lights to my roof rack, should I ditch the lightbar?

Have them all, I like the look. I opted for 2 spotlights either side of a smaller light bar and also have 2 LED lights facing the rear wired to the reverse with a manual over ride.
