The Expedition interior is super nice... tons of room.
So... UPGRADES! I was tired of using my motorcycle straps, as good as they are, they are a pain to get on and off... wrong fit for the application.
Anyway, I started thinking about the whitewater rafting world, which we are also involved...
You could get a sheet of Hypalon rubber from a raft parts supplier and lay it down before letting the dog jump in... Hypalon is super strong.
You could also get a river inner tube and tie it to the kayak, and let the dog float behind you... Or if the dog has it's own PFD you don't really need...
I can tell you my Aire Tribs have bladders inside each section of tubing and in the floor, so they are basically dual layer.
They also sell socks for dogs... :)

I was just in the Aire factory store yesterday... They had a Tomcat solo and a 2up in there... I personally do NOT kayak, but we have 2 Aire Tributary 14HD whitewater rafts. We have been rafting for a few years, and finally stepped into 2 of these new ones last fall at their 20% off labor day...
Remove shovel from roof rack
Grab toilet paper, a plastic bag (ziploc works best or a grocery bag will do), and travel bottle of hand sanitizer
Walk to a secluded place with shovel
Dig a 12" deep hole with shovel (at least 200' away from any rivers or lakes)
Spike shovel down into the ground in...
Yes to limited slip. Ours has a 3:73 rear end with limited slip... plus ours has an awd mode with clutch discs in the transfer case... the awd works awesome on snowy trails.
I would avoid the early years... some of those 5.4L engines didn’t have enough threads in the spark plug holes in the...
Whoa I like that thing! Added to my Wishlist… I also saw this today in a store and really like the idea of it: (solar)

Yes, 5.4L Triton in it. I’ve never checked the mileage on this one but my 2006 F150 has the same engine and gets a solid 15mpg.
The lift kits for these are coil spring spacers, and only cost about $175ish from Truxxx.

I understand not being a Ford guy... you may also consider a Tahoe if you are a Government Motors type of guy :)
The Tahoes have much better departure angles than the Suburban, and would maneuver much better in the tight stuff.

If I was in your position I would put $5k down on a 4Runner (pick whatever generation you prefer), and take the other $5k and buy:
-Tires
-Mild lift (something inexpensive just to increase ground clearance, not full blown shocks and a-arms and stuff)
-A roof rack (build your own, or a...
You might consider a Ford Expedition. Less than $6500 in ours so far and it has been proving itself very trailworthy. Check it out:

Really enjoyed a short trip today out to Sommercamp Rd in nearby Marsing. All BLM land. Great trails, geocaches, creek crossings, and general exploring... used 4Lo a lot today for all the climbing. Worked perfectly. Also filled up my water bottle and drank that creek water through my Sawyer Mini...
MSR mess kit for 4. It includes nesting pots and pans, large plates with sides that double as bowls, lids, pot/pan handles, amd insulated mugs all in one quick setup. They have a kit for 2 also.
We love it, works great. We currently use the big pot as a wash tub when we are done.
Best part is...
