Needing help choosing a rig please

Here are some questions that may help you narrow that down: How many people are in your party, and how old are they? This may help you decide whether you need the room of a full sized vehicle, or the compactness of a mid sized vehicle. Do you want a truck bed, or an suv cavern? Do you want an...

    Gear and Mod advice

Recovery gear: shovel, maxtrax or x-bulls, recovery strap, snatch strap, tree saver, more power puller (instead of a winch), 2 d-ring shackles. With that kit you should be able to get yourself out of most stuck situations. Air compressor (smittybilt one from 4wheelparts is fine to start), tire...

Auxbeam, you get what you pay for.

Sorry, not what I meant... It’s not about abuse, it’s about normal wear and tear, and the made in China LEDs can’t take it in my experience... they are junk. No way am I trusting cheap electronics to light my way in the dark. Filaments are still the way to go unless you have tons of money for...

LEDs aren't ready for prime-time, unless you pay big money... Just ask the Baja 1000 race teams... This is a perfect example of why lockers should be before lights... Thankful I have 0 LEDs on my cars, only 15 year old incandescent light bulbs... James

Gas Lantern or Battery powered Lantern?

I recommend buying a battery one that uses the same battery as your power tools. So if you use Ryobi 18V cordless drills, get a couple Ryobi 18V lights. That way you have the same batteries, and the same chargers, etc... James

US West WTB: MaxTrax / Quality Traction Board (Bay Area/Sacramento ASAP)

Uh... did you see all the X-Bull reviews on here? I have four, used with Ford Expeditions (heavy vehicles) for the last couple years, and they haven't broken yet... I got all 4 for about $160 shipped on Amazon... Or, you could spend $600 on 4 MaxTrax.... James

    Time for a change...

*UPDATED* I would avoid the Montero Sport. They are not the same vehicle as the Montero. Monteros cruise on the freeway just fine. My 2002 Montero XLS cruiseS at 80mph on the freeway at 3150rpm, with 31” tires and the short ratio rear end, smaller engine, and 4 speed transmission (3.5L and...

    Overland Trailer - Lowe’s 3x5 Carry On - Kevin

Made a decision today. Ordered a Lippert 3500# straight axle (no camber) in a 59" width with a 6x5.5 (139.7) pattern on the hubs. Should be in about 3 days before the first trip... LOL... sounds about right... LOL This will allow me to use the Montero wheels like I originally planned, with no...

Best (or at least possible) trailer for Chevy Tracker

I would not second that vote, because of their weight alone. I would start with a Lowe’s 3x5 Carry-On brand trailer and build off of that. That should come in at maybe 750lbs fully loaded with an RTT, camping cases, and water. If you were feeling up to it you could buy an axle, leaf springs...

PSA for those who may not know...Tow balls are NOT recovery points!

Little secret: I didn’t watch the video... lol... sorry guys. Didn’t realize it was being used for a snatch recovery :( I prefer using the pin also. Trouble is that it would stink to snatch on a pin, bend it, then have to cut it out of the receiver :( James

    Overland Trailer - Lowe’s 3x5 Carry On - Kevin

More progress... got the sides trimmed and spot welded in. Got a lot of the paint stripped off on the inside. For the grand finale: Found out the Mitsubishi Montero wheels are not going to fit... here are the specs: 15x8 6x139.7 +48 offset I ordered 4” of adapters and spacers to move the...

    Air hose

The red rubber GoodYear style hoses that come on Coxreel and Reelcraft hose reels are very nice, but you’ll need to coil them like a garden hose. You could try Flexzilla, they roll up a little tighter. James

PSA for those who may not know...Tow balls are NOT recovery points!

But the type of steel used is relevant... Any ideas how DOT grades the types if steel used in the tow balls? Chinese steel is definitely different than US or Japanese steel... James

    Flashlights

Like the dentist says: The best brand of floss is the one you use every day... My flashlight is my iPhone 8. It’s rechargeable, waterproof, in an Otterbox Defender for impact protection, and the brightness is adjustable. I don’t carry extra stuff with me, I feel it weighs me down. Even when...
