    LR3 vs LR4

I'm curious why you think this? I had a 1st Gen Ranger Rover Sport Supercharged (which dod have the rare rear locker) and have almost bought LR3/4s many times. I've wheeled with a bunch of them. I now have a 2nd Gen Xterra Pro-4X (so rear locker) and generally I think it's more capable, or at...

What is YOUR ultimate overland setup, and why?

Good idea on spinning-up a new thread. I joke around with buddies like @orange01z28 that I might like the builds and dreaming up the "ultimate" setups neaaaarly as much as the actual camping. Obviously that's not actually true, but kicking around cool ideas for "ultimate" rigs gets me through...

    Do you use beadlock wheels

Even though I said I don't think I need a beadlock earlier in this thread, if those had been available in a 8x170 pattern I'd probably have gone that route (since they're DOT legal). -TJ

    Do you use beadlock wheels

They're what I'd have if they hadn't been indefinitely back-ordered when I needed them. -TJ

    .

Wow, that could have been B-A-D. Glad it's something you can look back on and laugh now!!! Anyway, I have many, many... but I'll start with one that is pretty "fresh" because it just proves we can all still make bonehead mistakes... On one of the first trips after the Solid Axle Swap on my...

Midwest Voyager - 04 WJ Grand Cherokee

Nice! I don't think you'll mind ~8 degrees of caster TBH. The spec is 6.5* with a range of 6.0-7.5*. With as much lift as I ended up with in my WJ (best I can figure, about 7") and using JK axles I had to cut/rotate my Cs and we went for 7.5. Then again, I'm running hydro-assist so it...

Midwest Voyager - 04 WJ Grand Cherokee

No, I never ended up building out a storage situation for my WJ. I wanted to, and had some ideas, but I switched my setup way too many times and never got around to it before it became OBE. I ended up towing an overland trailer with the WJ, then got a WK2 Trailhawk and used that w/ the...

Midwest Voyager - 04 WJ Grand Cherokee

Tire size w/o major trimming is def the WJ's achilles heel. FWIW I was able to run a ~31.6" at 4" lift without actual fender trimming, just front bumper and front inner wheel-well trimming (along w/ fog light delete and doing the ZJ washer bottle mod). -TJ

Midwest Voyager - 04 WJ Grand Cherokee

Yeah, I've been lucky to avoid DW but have lots of buddies that have had it and it's definitely scary stuff. At the end of the day it usually ends up just being a matter of replacing every "soft part" involved in the front suspension and steering. Though @orange01z28 basically did that and...

Midwest Voyager - 04 WJ Grand Cherokee

Yes, more WJ content!!! FWIW if it's sitting higher than 3.5" I'd really consider a front long-arm, it helps a ton with ride and articulation when you get to 4"+ (the front arm angles get pretty severe with stock length arms). FWIW before I went wilder w/ my WJ I had IRO's 4" lift with the...

    Do you use beadlock wheels

I don't use bead locks on my full-size rig for a few reasons. First, the wheel/tire package is already heavy enough (30.6lbs wheel, 94lbs tire for a 124.6lbs combo). But probably even more of a factor is that I only air-down to 25psi at the lowest. My rig is ~10k lbs loaded out, I run an E...

    2003 4Runner Big Green Bean

I love that generation since it got the V8. That looks like a super nice build. -TJ

K5 Blazer or Gmc for over landing

All SBC's have "Siamesed" cylinders, not just 400s. To say that coolant doesn't flow between the center cylinders is pretty inaccurate. There are cooling jackets around all of the cylinders and around every port in the head, here's a cutaway showing that: What "Siamesed" means WRT the SBC...

Rig ideas needed for apartment dweller

Hmmm, you'd have to do some measuring and see if it will work for sleeping, but I'd put a WK2 Trailhawk out there as a suggestion. Super comfy, you can get a nice, low mileage unit for $40k easily. Personally, I'd suggest the 5.7 Hemi V8. In the real world it gets nearly the same mileage as...

    Beginning My Overlanding Journey

Yeah, I'm not sure why people "sleep on" (as the kids say) the Pro-4Xs lineup. I bought my Xterra Pro-4X used last year, and I think I paid about half as much as a similarly equipped, similar year/mileage 4Runner would have been. If you look at the new Frontier Pro-4X vs. a new Taco TRD Pro...

Overland Bound Forum - Why it is important to use the forum rather than decentralised chats.

I agree 1000% and see a lot of the issues of using Social Media or bespoke messaging apps in other "communities" I'm a part of. Way too much knowledge is lost, or at least not easily searchable when it's posted in a message app, IG, FB, etc. Forums "are forever" and the wealth of knowledge...

    Beginning My Overlanding Journey

Welcome, and congrats on starting the journey. I've said it before in other threads, but I really REALLY like those new Frontier Pro-4Xs. -TJ
