Are newer vehicles preventing you from choosing them for overlanding due to complexity?

@MOAK - I can tell you, your experience is not typical. Most cases I seen are the opposite. And many people do not have a big issue with this, they are very cool about it, specially long term overlanders. They break down, they go to a shop, maybe spend some days in an airbnb a...

Battery management with shore power and solar?

my biggest gripe with the ecoflow is the connectors to charge. At both ends - xtc60 to cigarette lighter plug, they are crap. With the cigarette plug thing, you can cut it and put an anderson, or some other thing, but at the other end - nothing you can do about it. Right now I would go...

Are newer vehicles preventing you from choosing them for overlanding due to complexity?

If that is true, that is just bad design, and just a particular model . Is not because electronics. And bad design is a plague that affects new and old vehicles. I tested my self on my disco 4 what happens when I unplugged different sensors, and also I seen this tested on the new...

Battery management with shore power and solar?

ideally it needs to be as close as possible to the battery it charges. The redarc can can take a lot of abuse, but since it is exposed to elements make sure the connections are weather proof.

Battery management with shore power and solar?

There is no such thing. Heat will slow down charging. Redarc has a higher tolerance, meaning it is will work even in an engine bay, but the output will go down a lot anyway. Put it in a cooler place, or get some additional active cooling.

Are newer vehicles preventing you from choosing them for overlanding due to complexity?

That is not true, they go in to 4wd fine. You get some warnings like TC is disabled, or some other safety system is not working , cruise control might not work, but 4wd is fine, including on the newest Defender. Yes your dash will be like a xmas tree, but you will get there. On some...

Relay vs solenoid for dual battery

This thing, works well, it is a VSR, it will only connect the batteries if the Alternator is running. I had something similar when I had an AGM as a house battery. If you place it somewhere between the batteries in a visible place, you can always tell if it is working or not from the status...

The iPhone 14 lineup will offer satellite connectivity!

It can be risky. While I was away, I deleted my esim by mistake. I was trying to make the data connection to use the physical SIM. So I see an option "remove data plan ". So ok, remove, I can add it later. Little I knew that, of course, "data plan" is the actual esim . While is not called...

The iPhone 14 lineup will offer satellite connectivity!

iphone 14 can be a dual esim. I have a inphone 12, and my origin country telecom is on esim, when I travel I get a normal local sim card, as a second one. I think many countries will, even the ones in the 3rd world, will offer an esim., but remains to be seen. Basically all they have...

The Autism Family Travels updated vehicle build. Take two! 2015 Jeep Patriot altitude.

For the aux power i got 2 small 20 amp batteries that you can connect in series, for a total of 40 amps, enough for a fridge and charging small devices. They are so small, you can even tuck them in under a seat . Something like this Look at the size of them, you fit them easy someplace..

Did you "baseline" your rig for overlanding, or just drive it and fix what was broke?

Had a Landcruiser, the famous reliable truck, same as used from Australia up to US as the lexus gx... EGR clogged up, oil leaks, transfer case leak, an issue with the brakes nobody could fix, ( it would break more on the right than left side - I changed : lower control arms...

Did you "baseline" your rig for overlanding, or just drive it and fix what was broke?

My experience with older trucks was not good. yes, you can fix them relatively easy and cheaper, but the ones I had were running ok most of the year and breaking down on holidays mostly.. Always made it back, but it was not pleasant. I think vehicles older than 10 years, when subjected...

Victron PPP-40 power pack - alternative to Ecoflow/ Jackery device types ?

i know there are many other solutions, I want to see how it stacks up against other power stations. I had everything, starting from a VSR + AGM up to redarc with lithium. I don't need more amps. Had 50 amps and it was too much, I downgraded to 40 Ah. I was almost never less than 70 %...

Victron PPP-40 power pack - alternative to Ecoflow/ Jackery device types ?

I found this little gem a couple of years ago, but the price was impossible. I searched the forum to see if anyone might have it in use. No joy, so I decided to start this discussion. What is so special about it ? well, in my opinion, for trips longer than a week-end out there are few...

    Campground Insanity

It is exactly what happened in some countries in Europe and now in Australia there are discussion to ban beaches driving and camping, some are already restricted. Australia case, considering it is a pretty big stretch of land mostly empty, goes to show it takes only a few to make that happen

    Campground Insanity

Personally I take offense to that. I am a very quiet and lovable drunk. Proof - I am still married after 17 years :) .Even got a special technique for getting drunk without disturbing anyone at camp/ or when wild camping, my wife and kid. I always have some wireless noise canceling...

    My rant for the day...

making content is hard work, and for people who are just starting, and not doing this for a living takes a while to reach quality. Many do it for fun, or just to share, for some it is a way to make some money. Big difference there. I think there are easier ways to make money, but ok. A...

    Campground Insanity

I know what you mean. Outside organized local meetings, I met one guy, some years ago, he was an OB member from Switzerland I think , I saw the metal badge with number on his vehicle. It was in Albania , on Gjipe beach, very scenic , it is famous for difficult access ( scraped the...

On the other hand, in such a place, I think your training on subs was of great value :) Yep, I started to do this whole thing just to avoid cities and crowds. In Europe you have good and bad camp sites, depends on the country and local style of camping, and depends of the season as...
